he 4-H Youth Development Educator is a key member of the 4-H Youth Development Team, responsible for planning, delivering, evaluating, and managing youth programs that engage participants through clubs, group activities, and community outreach. This role provides educational programming in areas such as Animal Science, Agriculture, Horticulture, STEM, Nutrition, Healthy Living, and traditional 4-H topics, using both innovative and traditional approaches. The educator collaborates with colleagues across New York State and the South Central District to develop shared programming opportunities, supports efforts to build relationships with community leaders, and helps integrate best practices and new tools into youth development initiatives.
This position specifically oversees the Animal Science and Agriculture program areas, including the planning and delivery of local, district, and statewide events focused on dairy, livestock, poultry, waterfowl, dogs, and other animal science topics. The educator leads monthly classroom instruction for elementary-aged youth through the Ag in the Classroom program, promoting agricultural literacy and hands-on learning. Additionally, the role is responsible for coordinating all 4-H events and activities at the Chenango County Fair, including the organization and execution of the 4-H Livestock Auction program, ensuring meaningful youth participation and showcasing the impact of 4-H to the broader community.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in education, agriculture, horticulture, or equivalent education (Associate's degree and 2 years transferable program/functional experience may substitute for Bachelor's degree requirement).
Experience working with livestock and or dairy cattle.
Demonstrated ability to plan, teach and evaluate informal educational programs through a variety of delivery methods to reach individuals and groups.
Ability to communicate effectively through oral, written and visual means.
Demonstrated ability to function as a team member working with volunteers and staff.
Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.
Ability to meet acceptable background check standards.
Ability to work flexible hours which may include evenings and/or weekends, as appropriate
Preferred Qualifications:
4-H and youth development experience.
Demonstrated ability to utilize computer technologies for educational and communication purposes.
Knowledge and experience in a non-formal education system, such as Cornell Cooperative Extension.
Experience working with volunteers and volunteer management.

Program Responsibilities:
Program Delivery - 70%
Utilize established program materials and resources in program work.
Implement existing 4-H programming to include, but not limited to: 4-H Afterschool Programming, Animal Science Programs (Dairy Bowl, Horse Bowl, etc.), the Junior Livestock Show, the Chenango County Fair, the State Fair, 4-H Agriculture in the Classroom, and 4-H County, District, and State special events.
Teach existing educational programs as defined utilizing a variety of proven educational methodologies.
Work to foster acceptance of 4-H Program, methods and policies while addressing community and individual needs and considering diverse audiences.
Under the direction and oversight of program leadership, occasionally apply established subject matter knowledge to create lesson plans to deliver educational program.
Serve as a subject-matter resource in discipline to staff and participants, community organizations and the general public.
Represent CCE before the public, community leaders, government officials, Cornell or other land grant universities as part of program delivery.
May be involved in multidisciplinary team efforts within the Association or regionally to deliver program.
May assist in ensuring that program delivery is within scope of statewide Plan of Work.
Program Evaluation - 10%
Implement program evaluation as designed.
Interact with program participants to obtain their evaluation of programs.
Assist the Subject Educator II in the process of analyzing program data, and based on that analysis, assist in making recommendations for improvements in program offerings.
Communicate evaluation findings to constituents as appropriate.
Administrative Responsibilities:
Direction - 5%
Assist in the planning of major 4-H programs and events.
Provide input in planning the structure of delivering educational programs via various methods.
Provide input to planning unit budget based on program feasibility needs and assist in identifying opportunities for 4-H fund development activities.
Assist supervisor in initiating effective professional relationships with other agencies, organizations and businesses that promote effective communication to facilitate continued programming efforts.
Management - 5%
Provide guidance to volunteers and co-workers, including those performing similar work.
Solve problems and resolve conflicts that arise within the 4-H Youth Development Program utilizing appropriate policies and procedures.
Support the existing volunteer enrollment and selection process.
Coordination/Operation - 5%
Organize and coordinate activities related to 4-H Club and Independent Member Programming.
Coordinate, compile and organize existing program resources and program materials.
Assist in utilizing effective marketing strategies in the promotion of programming efforts to include, but not limited to: print media, news media, social media and multi-media efforts.
Interact effectively with program participants and volunteers to provide programming and support.
Maintain effective professional relationships with other agencies, organizations and businesses that promote effective communication to facilitate continued programming efforts.
Provide moderately complex administrative tasks to support the delivery of established educational program goals.
Provide information as requested to assist with preparation of reports, impact statements, and success stories on program progress and accomplishments for funders, advisory committees, Board and others as necessary.
Professional Improvement - 5%
In cooperation with Supervisor and/or Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes and Association priorities.
Participate in all required orientation, training, and/or in-service meetings and trainings as scheduled/required.
Pursue personal growth through expanding personal knowledge of the total organization and through updating techniques and technical skills relating to the position.
Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension including but not limited to attendance at staff meetings, timely reporting of expenses, working with other staff, general marketing of Cooperative Extension programs and other duties as assigned.
