The Virology/Immunology Supervisor serves to supervise scientific research and analytical activities of the Virology/Immunology Unit of the Infectious Disease Laboratory. The Virology/Immunology Unit uses state-of-the-art laboratory methods to detect and characterize samples submitted to the Infectious Disease Laboratory for viral and bacterial agents of infectious and communicable diseases in support of epidemiological investigations of infectious disease outbreaks and surveillance within the State of Minnesota and is an active national partner in infectious disease surveillance.
This position will require occasional evening or weekend work.
Working as a Virology & Immunology Unit Supervisor, you will:
Direct and assist in the performance of state-of-the-art laboratory methods.
Evaluate and implement advanced technologies to continually improve the Infectious Disease program.
Incorporate continuous quality control/quality assurance measures to fulfill accreditation requirements.
Provide oversight of grant funded activities.
Represent MDH in public forums, including presentations at research symposia and conferences.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution.
Four (4) years of laboratory training or experience that includes: clinical microbiology and/or immunology.
Demonstrated leadership experience that may include any of the following:
Experience as a supervisor, team lead, lead worker, OR project lead*
Completion of a State leadership development program, such as Emerging Leaders Institute (ELI) or Senior Leadership Institute (SLI)
Completion of a similar or equivalent leadership development program through another organization
A paid or unpaid position leading a program or chairing a committee, such as an Employee Resource Group (ERG). This experience must also include:
1+ years of identifying issues, goals, and strategic actions
100+ hours per year time commitment
*A project lead provides leadership, guidance, and advanced specialized technical expertise for a team doing evaluation, development, design, testing, and/or implementation in a project environment. Projects are efforts with defined phases where a combination or organizational resources including a pre-determined budget are pulled together toward a specific objective. These efforts are usually discontinued once the project is completed.
Minimum qualifications to be assessed during the interview process:
Experience with laboratory quality assurance practices.
Experience implementing and evaluating laboratory methods
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present technical information to diverse audiences and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders
Human relations skills sufficient to achieve effective working relationships within the agency and externally.
A master's degree in microbiology, chemistry, public health, laboratory science, or related science field may substitute for 18 months of experience, and a PhD for 2 years.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in high complexity testing within one of the following subspecialties: Bacteriology, Mycobacteriology, Mycology, or Virology.
Four (4) years of laboratory training or experience, or both, in high complexity testing within Diagnostic Immunology.
