Position Overview:
SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory attracts thousands of scientists from all over the world each year. Along with probing the fundamental nature of matter and the universe through particle physics and astrophysics research, we are advancing discoveries in materials science, structural biology, chemistry, and energy sciences. The Accelerator Directorate (AD) at SLAC designs, builds, operates and maintains electron accelerators to support the SLAC scientific mission as well as cutting edge accelerator science and technology R&D. We are in the final construction phase of LCLS-II-HE, which will double the electron beam energy of LCLS-II, the world¿s first fully CW Superconducting Linac-based X-ray Free Electron Laser. This is a very exciting time at SLAC, and for the science opportunities that will arise with these new capabilities.
The Accelerator Directorate is seeking a highly motivated, experienced and engaged Manager for Environmental, Safety, Health and Quality (ESH&Q). This position includes performing complex technical work in a wide range of ESH disciplines to ensure a safe work environment, to achieve compliance with the Laboratory's ESH standards and governmental regulatory requirements, and to facilitate the safe and timely execution of work. The ESH&Q Manager is a member of the senior management team in the Accelerator Directorate and reports directly to the Associate Laboratory Director for the directorate.
The roles and responsibilities of the EHS&Q Manager include but are not limited to:
Serve as the AD management point-of-contact for interpretation and resolution of safety and quality issues
Serve as the lead for the AD Field Safety Team
Represent AD on complex-wide or institution-wide advisory and review committees related to safety and quality
Develop, implement and maintain technical programs, system and processes necessary to ensure the overall safety and health of AD employees, visitors, associated workers and the community
Assess, develop and conduct employee and student training, emergency preparedness activities, and/or assurance and accreditation programs as necessary
Maintain a working knowledge of consensus standards, specific government regulations and good practice requirements for technical subjects related to accelerator operationsIdentify, assess and monitor workplace conditions (including, but not limited to, chemical, physical, biological and radiological hazards) that could present impediments to the safe execution of work. Recommend solution and improvements to minimize errors.
Investigate accidents, incidents, injuries and complaints concerning potential conditions or practices that could lead to work errors
Provide technical advice and interpretation of various government regulations and university policies.
Proactively identify topics that the AD leadership team should focus on to improve our operational practices over the short and long term, including identifying new risks and mitigation actions.
Assess, develop, and maintain our emergency preparedness and disaster recovery activities.
Sustain a high level of two-way trust and understanding with the DOE Site Office, DOE HQ, SLAC operations divisions, and the SLAC Director's Office, maintaining a highly responsive and effective line of communication on all aspects of ESH&Q for AD.
Work in collaboration with SLAC ESH Division leadership, and Contract Assurance leadership, along with subject matter experts to represent AD ESH and assurance concerns; and actively participate in the development of laboratory policy, processes, and process improvements.
To be successful in this position you will bring:
Bachelor's degree in a scientific or engineering discipline and ten years of relevant related progressively responsible experience, or combination of education and relevant experience. Advanced degree desirable
Demonstrated ability to conduct effective health and safety surveys, quantitative and qualitative exposure/risk assessments, and data analyses; ability to provide recommendations for exposure/risk control.
Demonstrated ability managing a broad range of Environment, Safety, and Health programs, successfully solving problems and implementing effective solutions.
Must have strong oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively with a wide variety of people within a cross-functional team of diverse talents.
Ability to function as a senior manager, with responsibility for developing and mentoring managers and staff
Ability to maintain current knowledge of and interpret specific government agency requirements (statutes, regulations, licenses, and permits) and university policies.
Knowledge of US Department of Energy orders and guidance documents is preferred.
Ability to lead professionally in an emergency/crisis situation
Demonstrated ability to manage staff of diverse backgrounds and competencies.
Working knowledge of the scientific and technical aspects of various regulatory requirements and potential impact on assigned work area(s).

The expected pay range for this position is $ $220,859 to $266,991 per annum. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
