Experience in the safe operation of scaffolding, ladders, and roofing tools and equipment.
Experienced in roof inspection and damage assessment.
Experience in minor masonry repairs, caulking, and sealant application.
Job Description:
The Facilities Planning & Management Department at Iowa State University is seeking a skilled and dependable full-time Roofer. Under general supervision, the Roofer applies the knowledge and expertise of a journeyworker to build, cover, and repair roofs. This position plays a critical role in maintaining the integrity and safety of campus buildings by performing roofing tasks and related duties as needed.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Order and prepare necessary supplies for roofing projects.
Erect and dismantle scaffolding and ladders safely and efficiently.
Inspect roofs for defects and determine required repairs.
Perform roof repairs including patches, small roof replacements, wall flashing repairs, targeted patching of roof drains, and leak repairs using proper roofing practices.
Clean drains and remove debris from roofs to ensure proper drainage and safety.
Assist area mechanics and carpenters with non-roofing tasks as needed.
Conduct minor mortar joint repairs, apply deck coatings, and caulk sealant joints.
Complete FAMIS work orders, maintain accurate time cards, and respond to email communications promptly.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Makes special and routine roof inspections, locates and repairs leaks in asphalt, asbestos, and slate shingles, tile and built-up roofs and single-ply membranes.
Replaces asphalt, shingles, and other cold application roofs, and built-up roofs and applies caulking materials and membrane waterproofing.
Erects and removes scaffolding, assists sheet metal mechanics and carpenters when not roofing.
Performs all other duties peculiar to, and normally required in the trade of roofer and damproofer, following recognized procedures and techniques for such work.
Assists in directing the work of apprentices and other help.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of the principles, methods, and techniques used in the roofing trade.
Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
Knowledge of roofing tools and equipment and skill in their safe use.
Ability to safely erect and work from ladders and scaffolds.
Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, and blueprints.
Ability to work in extreme temperatures.
Ability to work at heights.
Ability to lift 100 pounds.
