Job Description:
The Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition, co-administered by the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) and the College of Health and Human Sciences (CHHS), is seeking an Academic Advisor II to guide and support undergraduate students in achieving their academic and personal goals. This position will primarily advise students majoring in Culinary Food Science and Food Science, with some support for Nutritional Science and Integrated Health Sciences majors. The advisor will work closely with first- and second-year students to provide degree planning, explain academic policies, connect them with campus resources, and ensure they meet graduation requirements. Responsibilities include assisting with transfer and change-of-major processes, conducting degree audits, and providing guidance on academic support services.
Key duties include:
Serving as the departmental lead for Experience Iowa State and student campus visits.
Coordinating FSHN Day and Admitted Student Day events.
Participating in recruitment and student welcome activities.
Teaching an orientation course and co-coordinating the Food Science and Human Nutrition (FSHN) Learning Community.
Engaging with curriculum, advising, and recruitment committees in both CALS and CHHS.
Managing enrollment lists, preparing reports, and responding to student inquiries.
The successful candidate will collaborate with other academic advisor and student services support staff and departmental faculty, remain current on university academic policies and procedures, and participate in ongoing professional development.

The Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition at Iowa State University has a strong tradition of hands-on learning and preparing graduates for successful careers. As the only four-year institution in Iowa offering undergraduate majors in food science, culinary food science, dietetics, and nutritional science, we provide students with unique opportunities to learn from experts and gain practical experience. Our graduate programs, including Food Science and Technology, Diet and Exercise, Nutritional Science, and the Master of Professional Practice in Dietetics, are also one-of-a-kind in the state. The department additionally offers an RN-to-BSN nursing degree and an MS in Nursing, with an accelerated (4+1) BS-to-Nursing program launching soon in collaboration with Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. We are home to innovative facilities and partnerships, including the Center for Crops Utilization Research, ISU Creamery, Polymer and Food Safety Consortium, Midwest Grape and Wine Industry Institute, and Brewery Lab, supporting ongoing research and collaboration with industry leaders.
This position will be full-time, in-person.
