Job Description:
The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) is seeking a Manager of Budget and Finance to support long-range planning and key financial strategic goals. A key focus of this role is direct supervision and team leadership, including oversight of approximately eight staff members who currently support academic departments, research centers, and administrative units within the college. These individuals will transition into a newly centralized team, and the manager will guide the alignment of their positions within the new structure. Additionally, the manager will serve as an official delegate for the Senior Manager of Budget and Finance, representing the office in meetings and college-level initiatives as needed. While the primary emphasis is on supervision, the individual may also maintain a limited financial portfolio.
Example of Duties
Support strategic planning and project alignment efforts to support the college's mission and financial priorities.
Supervise, mentor, and develop a high-performing team, including full responsibility for hiring, coaching, evaluating, and managing performance.
Maintain staffing plans in coordination with HR and drive workforce strategies that align with long-term goals.
Support annual and multi-year budgeting processes using an all-funds approach, including forecasting and financial planning for general, research, gift, and discretionary funds.
Advise department chairs, directors, and faculty on budget management, resource allocation, and financial planning to advance unit goals.
Analyze and report on financial trends, providing data-driven insights and recommendations to leadership.
Recommend and implement financial policies and procedures that ensure compliance, consistency, and efficiency.
This role presents a unique and rewarding challenge: to build a new team within a newly centralized structure and developing a cohesive service model. As you bring the team together, you'll standardize practices and foster a collaborative culture. The financial scope of CALS is broad and complex.
If you're motivated by building systems, leading change, and empowering others behind the scenes, this role will be especially fulfilling. It offers a strong connection to Iowa State's land-grant mission, supporting real-world research and academic success in ways that make a visible difference across the college.
Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an ongoing basis without sponsorship. Immigration sponsorship is not available for this position.
