CVS Health is seeking a Lead Data Scientist to join the Retail Consumer Analytics team, leading high-impact efforts in Promotions Analytics . This role focuses on improving how CVS evaluates and invests in retail promotions by measuring what truly drives performance, optimizing discount strategy, and guiding smarter decisions across customer segments and product categories.
As a senior individual contributor , you will shape our promotional investment strategy. You will help quantify the impact of different discount @types on outcomes such as trips, units sold, and total sales in non-pharmacy retail areas (Front Store). Your work will inform decisions on how CVS allocates marketing budgets across promotions, coupons, vendors, and categories. You will design and deploy advanced analytics solutions - including causal inference models, multi-touch attribution (MTA), and investment mix models - that deliver measurable improvements in offer effectiveness and business outcomes. The insights you generate will influence millions in promotional spend and help CVS serve customers more effectively while growing retail performance.
You will work closely with teams in merchandising, personalization, pricing, and finance to ensure insights translate into real-world action. What you will do:
Translate business questions into data problems and define solution roadmaps; build analytics solutions independently and in collaboration with cross-functional teams.
Develop measurement strategies using causal inference techniques (e.g., uplift, DiD, synthetic control, hierarchical GLMs) to evaluate the true incremental value of retail offers.
Lead the creation of multi-touch attribution (MTA) frameworks and discount effectiveness models that span channels, categories, and customer segments.
Build and scale marketing mix and budget optimization models to support long-term planning and improve investment allocation across promotions, coupons, and co-funded vendor programs.
Analyze promotion impact on Front Store KPIs , such as trips, units, and sales, across product categories and customer segments.
Develop analytics tools and operational KPIs to improve planning and decision-making across business teams.
Collaborate with partners across the business to embed advanced analytics into everyday workflows.
Partner with engineering and ML Ops teams to deploy models into scalable, production-ready pipelines using cloud-based tools.
Communicate analytical insights clearly and effectively to stakeholders at all levels, including senior leadership and non-technical teams.
Stay informed on advances in causal modeling, attribution science, and generative AI, and help integrate the latest techniques into CVS's analytics ecosystem.
Contribute to team-wide modeling standards and offer informal mentorship and technical guidance to peers.
Minimum Requirements:
7+ years of relevant experience in data science, econometrics, or applied analytics, including: -Experience with causal modeling techniques, including quasi-experimental methods like uplift, DiD, and double ML. - Developing attribution models , investment effectiveness frameworks, or MMM models in business settings. -Experience in machine learning and statistical modeling including regression, trees, classification, clustering, and time series. -Expertise in Python or R, SQL , and working with relational databases. -Experience with ML Ops tools and cloud-based platforms such as Azure, AWS, or GCP. -Experience analyzing business outcomes using KPIs like sales, trips, units, or margin, and applying findings to strategy or planning. -Experience leading complex analytics projects and mentoring junior team members.
Required Education:
Bachelor's degree in a quantitative field such as Economics, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or Engineering; Master's preferred.
Preferred Qualifications:
PhD in Economics or related field.
Excellent attention to detail and very strong communication skills - able to clearly explain insights and models to stakeholders at all levels, from junior analysts to senior leadership.
Proven ability to align analytics with strategic business goals and influence decision-making with data.
Experience in retail promotions, marketing analytics, or personalization analytics.
Familiarity with budget optimization frameworks, simulation tools, discount planning models, or sales attribution techniques - especially in the @context of long-term promotional impact.
Understanding of forecasting methods and time-based trends, particularly as they inform planning or attribution.
Deep knowledge of merchandising and offer constructs (e.g., promotions, vendor-funded offers, loyalty programs) and the metrics used to evaluate them.
Experience managing large-scale projects and collaborating across multiple business stakeholders in a matrixed organization.
Pay Range
The typical pay range for this role is:
$130,295.00 - $260,590.00
This pay range represents the base hourly rate or base annual full-time salary for all positions in the job grade within which this position falls. The actual base salary offer will depend on a variety of factors including experience, education, geography and other relevant factors. This position is eligible for a CVS Health bonus, commission or short-term incentive program in addition to the base pay range listed above. This position also includes an award target in the company's equity award program.
