Job Title: Mechanical Design Engineer
Job Description
The Mechanical Design Engineer designs machines and conveyor systems using SolidWorks, leads projects from concept through completion, and collaborates closely with internal teams and customers to deliver high-quality, cost-effective automation solutions on time and within budget.
Responsibilities
Design machines, automation systems, and conveyor systems using SolidWorks, with Inventor considered when appropriate.
Develop detailed mechanical designs, models, and drawings for conveyors, pneumatics, powertrain-related equipment, and other automation systems.
Oversee projects from start to finish, serving as the primary designer and ensuring all mechanical design requirements are met.
Collaborate closely with electrical engineering and sales teams to align mechanical designs with overall project objectives and customer needs.
Communicate directly with customers to clarify requirements, provide design updates, and ensure project expectations are consistently met.
Deliver projects on time and under budget by effectively managing design scope, schedule, and resources.
Prepare cost estimates and quotes for mechanical design projects, considering materials, labor, and installation requirements.
Provide field installation support at customer sites, including conveyor and machine installation, assembly, and troubleshooting.
Create and maintain clear and accurate customer documentation, including drawings, manuals, and technical specifications.
Support shop and machine shop activities by working hands-on with equipment and collaborating with shop personnel to resolve design and assembly issues.
Use project management skills to organize tasks, track progress, and coordinate with stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle.
Utilize Microsoft Office tools to prepare reports, documentation, presentations, and project-related communication.
Essential Skills
Proven experience in mechanical design of machines and conveyor systems, including automation systems and powertrain-related equipment.
Strong proficiency with SolidWorks for 3D modeling and mechanical design; Inventor experience is considered.
5+ years of mechanical engineering or mechanical design experience preferred; 3+ years of experience considered.
Experience in mechanical engineering, with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or a similar discipline preferred; relevant experience can supersede a degree.
Hands-on experience with conveyor systems, pneumatics, and automation systems in an industrial or automotive setting.
Ability to oversee design projects from concept through installation, including cost estimating and quoting.
Strong communication skills for collaborating with electrical and sales teams and for direct customer interaction.
Competence in project management, including planning, scheduling, and coordinating design activities.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office for documentation, reporting, and communication.
Experience in or exposure to the automotive industry, including work with conveyor and automation systems supporting automotive production.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience with installation, assembly, and field support of conveyor systems and automated machinery.
Prior collaboration with large automotive manufacturers and familiarity with their production environments.
Ability to create clear, professional customer documentation, including technical manuals and drawings.
Comfort working both at a desk and in a shop environment, engaging directly with machine shop personnel.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to delivering projects on time and within budget.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a collaborative, open-office setting.
Willingness to travel approximately 15% of the time for installation and field support.
Work Environment
This is an on-site, full-time position with a typical schedule of Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The role involves spending approximately 6070% of the time at a desk in an open floor plan office that encourages collaboration among engineers and other team members. The remaining time includes shop support, where engineers work hands-on with equipment and interact directly with machine shop personnel during assembly and installation activities. Travel is approximately 15%, primarily to automotive manufacturing locations for installation support and field work. Remote work is not an option. The company offers a stable 40-hour workweek outside of installation periods, along with 10 days of paid time off and 6 paid holidays during the first 12 months. Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $37.00 - $49.00/hr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
