EY's State and Local Tax (SALT) team is a growing practice within the organization, and you'll see that growth reflected in your career. As a Tax Senior Manager, you'll play a key leadership role within a rapidly growing team that has experienced significant recent expansion and aims to double in size over the next few years. As a Senior Manager in Indirect Tax, you will advise on regulatory changes, assess and support compliance and reporting needs for both public and private entities. You'll develop and implement strategies, operating models, and compliance frameworks to manage indirect taxes throughout the tax lifecycle, increasing operational efficiency and ensuring regulatory requirements are met. Key responsibilities include identifying opportunities for tax optimization, credits and refund recovery, and exposure reduction; managing indirect tax strategies, compliance, remediation processes, controversies, and corrective filings; and supporting tax process review and technology transformation to enhance service offerings.
Your key responsibilities
You'll likely spend most of your time on a diverse array of projects, responsibilities, and tasks, with a focus on tax controversy and advisory matters. To support these efforts, we'll look to you to apply your extensive knowledge of state and local tax concepts and law. You can expect to work in a highly collaborative culture, where listening to and sharing information with colleagues is an essential part of the role.

As a Senior Manager, your core purpose is to lead the delivery of complex processes, solutions, and projects, maintaining a strong focus on quality and risk management while navigating operational and organizational dynamics. You'll be accountable for program and project management, resource planning, and engagement economics, and will provide leadership and direction to teams with broad visibility. This role presents the challenge of solving complex problems, driving innovation, and delivering thought leadership in a dynamic environment. You'll learn to manage client relationships, revenue generation, and commercial engagements, while developing deep insight into indirect tax best practices. Regular travel required to meet external client needs.

To qualify for the role, you must have
Bachelor's degree required (4-year degree) with an emphasis in accounting, finance, or economics; master's degree preferred.
Typically, no less than 5 - 7 years relevant experience.
A CPA certification, or good standing as a member of a state bar
Strong tax technical skills including tax research and writing skills, flow through entity taxation, income and franchise taxes, transfer taxes, and compliance skills as it relates to multi-state jurisdictions
Experience communicating with tax authorities, advocating on behalf of clients and writing persuasively.
Project management experience in delivering high-quality work products in a fast-paced environment
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Demonstrated expertise in tax legislation and impact assessment.
Experience with indirect tax refund and recovery review.
Ability to drive process improvement and optimization.
Skills in risk mitigation and data analysis and interpretation.
Familiarity with tax compliance and reporting requirements.
Business skills in building and managing relationships, client trust and value, and communicating with impact.
Complex problem-solving and critical thinking abilities.
Proven track record in driving outcomes and learning agility.

We offer a comprehensive compensation and benefits package where you'll be rewarded based on your performance and recognized for the value you bring to the business. The base salary range for this job is:
New York City, Boston, and Washington DC Metro Areas, Washington State, and Southern California offices - $162,100 to $336,500
Bay Area California offices - $168,900 to $350,500
All other offices locations in the US, including Sacramento - $135,000 to $308,500
Individual salaries within these ranges are determined through a wide variety of factors including but not limited to education, experience, knowledge, skills and geography. In addition, our Total Rewards package includes medical and dental coverage, pension and 401(k) plans, and a wide range of paid time off options.
Under our flexible vacation policy, you'll decide how much vacation time you need based on your own personal circumstances. You'll also be granted time off for designated EY Paid Holidays, Winter/Summer breaks, Personal/Family Care, and other leaves of absence when needed to support your physical, financial, and emotional well-being.
