The City of Mt. Pleasant is seeking a detail-oriented and analytical Accountant to join its Finance Department. Under the general supervision of the Director of Finance, the Accountant performs a broad range of professional accounting functions supporting the City's financial operations, budgeting activities, grant administration, financial reporting, and annual audit processes.

This position plays an important role in maintaining accurate and reliable financial records and ensuring compliance with applicable governmental accounting standards, laws, regulations, contracts, and City policies. The Accountant will work with multiple funds and financial activities and will exercise independent judgment in analyzing financial information, identifying discrepancies, resolving issues, and recommending improvements.

The ideal candidate will have strong governmental accounting knowledge, excellent attention to detail, sound judgment, and the ability to manage competing priorities while maintaining accuracy and confidentiality.

Essential Job Functions include General Accounting & Financial Records, Accounts Payable and Receivable, reconciliation and financial analysis, financial reporting, budget support, grants and project accounting, annual audit and year end financial activities, fixed assets, process improvement, and professional development.

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, or a closely related field and at least two years of professional accounting experience, preferably in a governmental or public agency setting, is required.

Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience may be considered where appropriate.

The standard office hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Starting salary in the low $70,000's, depending on qualifications.

Please note that not all applicants who complete testing will be invited to interview.

Interviews are tentatively scheduled for October 26 and 28. We anticipate the selected candidate to begin work in mid-December 2026.

City of Mt. Pleasant Profile Mt. Pleasant is a growing and financially stable community located in the geographic center of Michigan's Lower Peninsula. We are a warm and friendly community dedicated to retaining our small-town traditions while building a vital economy. The area population officially stands at 21,688 but can swell to two or three times that number due to special events and the approximate 30,000 daily visitors to the Soaring Eagle Resort and Casino located at the east City limits.

CMU offers more than 170 programs at the Bachelor, Master, and Specialist Degree levels, as well as their Medical School. Mid-Michigan College's Mt. Pleasant Campus is an option for those who wish to transfer to a university or prepare for a career in health, business, or industrial technologies. Five other colleges and/or universities are within 45 miles of Mt. Pleasant. This community is dedicated to education and offers seven neighborhood schools, one middle school, and two high schools.
