The Software Engineer II designs, develops, and maintains medium-sized and moderately complex software solutions that support data processing, transmission, and integration with enterprise systems. This intermediate-level role focuses on full-stack development, responsive web interfaces, and relational and non-relational database design, while working with industrial technologies such as MQTT and Ignition. The engineer works independently with general supervision, collaborates with cross-functional teams, and contributes to CI/CD pipelines and containerized cloud deployments to deliver robust, scalable applications in operational technology environments.
Responsibilities
Perform development, debugging, and maintenance of medium-sized and moderately complex software modules.
Implement medium-sized and moderately complex workflows within software applications.
Design and develop relational and non-relational database schemas to support application and enterprise data needs.
Develop software for data processing and transmission, including handling data pulled through MQTT and similar industrial messaging technologies.
Execute full-stack development tasks, including both front-end and back-end components.
Create responsive web designs and user interfaces using modern web frameworks such as React.
Integrate applications with enterprise databases and systems, including ERP and MES platforms.
Build custom applications on the Ignition industrial software platform, including Perspective applications with complex logic, REST services, and integrations with MES and ERP systems.
Deploy and manage Ignition-based applications in containerized environments using source control and CI/CD processes.
Develop, implement, and debug complex software components in containerized and virtualized environments.
Work with CI/CD pipelines in cloud environments to support continuous integration and deployment.
Collaborate with clients, project managers, and other engineering disciplines to execute project scope and deliverables.
Assist in developing engineering and functional system specifications for software and integrated solutions.
Prepare and maintain comprehensive program and technical documentation.
Participate in design reviews and code reviews to ensure quality, maintainability, and adherence to best practices.
Mentor junior developers as appropriate, providing guidance on development practices and project work.
Support proposal and project planning activities by contributing technical insight and effort estimates.
Continue to build knowledge of organizational practices, procedures, and standards.
Meet billable hour expectations as communicated during onboarding.
Perform other related duties as assigned to support project and organizational objectives.
Essential Skills
Practical knowledge of software development practices and experience in one or more programming languages, such as Python, Java, C#, or JavaScript.
Strong understanding of both front-end and back-end development within a full-stack environment.
Strong knowledge of relational and non-relational databases, including schema design and optimization.
Proficiency in modern web development frameworks, with experience in React-based front-end development.
Strong proficiency with version control systems, particularly Git.
Understanding of containerization and virtualization technologies for application deployment and management.
Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and deployment processes in cloud environments.
Basic cloud deployment experience and familiarity with cloud-based application architectures.
Solid understanding of database design principles and data modeling concepts.
Strong problem-solving and debugging skills applied to complex software components.
Ability to work independently with general supervision while managing tasks and priorities effectively.
Collaborative approach to team-based development and cross-functional work.
Detail-oriented mindset with strong organizational and documentation skills.
Strong written and verbal communication skills for working with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Understanding of enterprise systems and integration patterns, including ERP and MES.
Familiarity with Agile or Scrum development methodologies.
Minimum of 3-5 years of relevant professional experience in software development.
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience building applications for manufacturing, industrial automation, or other operational technology environments.
Hands-on development experience on the Ignition platform, including Perspective and gateway scripting.
Familiarity with SCADA, MES, historian systems, or industrial communication protocols such as OPC-UA and MQTT.
Experience integrating with ERP or MES systems in a production environment.
Experience with traditional full-stack software engineering, including backend development and user interface implementation.
Exposure to MES and ERP concepts and workflows within industrial or production settings.
Experience with QA/QC practices and performing quality checks on own code and solutions.
Work Environment
This role operates primarily in a professional engineering and software development environment that supports industrial and operational technology solutions. Work focuses on building and maintaining applications that interact with manufacturing and automation systems, including data pulled through MQTT and integrations with MES and ERP platforms. The position involves working with containerized and virtualized applications, CI/CD pipelines, and cloud-based deployments, using tools such as Git and modern web frameworks. The role is largely office- or remote-based, with less than 10% travel expected. This includes a short onsite trip early in the engagement and another visit to the customer site approximately six months into onboarding. The environment emphasizes collaboration with clients, project managers, and other engineering disciplines, as well as participation in design and code reviews and adherence to structured development processes.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $60.00 - $87.00/hr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
