Job Description
Tesla is seeking a Senior Power Systems Electrical Engineer to join its Central Engineering Infrastructure Design Team in Austin. This role focuses on designing complete medium- and low-voltage electrical power systems for Tesla's manufacturing facilities while managing major electrical equipment procurement, power system studies, and EPC design partners.
This is a highly technical, design-focused position that combines power system engineering, equipment procurement, electrical design, and project management.
Key Responsibilities
Design medium- and low-voltage electrical power systems for industrial and manufacturing facilities.
Develop engineering deliverables including:
One-line diagrams
Electrical schematics
Point-to-point wiring diagrams
Cable schedules
Equipment layouts
Equipment elevations
Nameplate schedules
Installation details
Create specifications and manage procurement for major electrical equipment including:
HV/MV and MV/LV transformers
Medium-voltage GIS
5kV switchgear and MCCs
480V switchgear and MCCs
Review vendor designs and manufacturing drawings.
Attend Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs) to verify equipment performance before shipment.
Collaborate with construction, facilities, operations, and maintenance teams throughout project execution.
Develop and manage power system models using SKM and/or ETAP.
Perform:
Arc flash studies
Short circuit analysis
Load flow studies
Motor starting analysis
Protective device coordination studies
Develop engineering Basis of Design (BOD) documents and scopes of work.
Manage outside EPC firms through design development and execution.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering (Power Systems focus preferred).
10+ years of power systems engineering experience.
Experience with:
SKM
ETAP
AutoCAD
Revit
Strong understanding of:
Medium-voltage and low-voltage power systems
Switchgear and motor control centers
Transformer applications
Industrial power distribution
Power system studies
Strong project documentation and organizational skills.
Ability to communicate effectively with engineers, vendors, contractors, and installation teams.
