Position Summary: The Medical Assistant is a nine-month position (40 weeks) that reports to the Associate Vice President for Student Life and Dean for Wellness providing both clinical and administrative support to ensure the efficient delivery of high-quality healthcare services to students. In collaboration with the Wellness Center's medical providers, the Medical Assistant assists with patient care, clinical procedures, front office operations, medical records management, and health service administration.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Prepare students for medical examinations by obtaining and documenting medical histories, chief complaints, medications, allergies, vital signs, and other relevant health information.
Assist the Nurse Practitioner and other medical providers during examinations, treatments, procedures, and minor surgical interventions.
Perform venipuncture, specimen collection, point-of-care testing, and other approved laboratory procedures within scope of practice.
Collect, label, process, and prepare laboratory specimens for testing and transport.
Administer routine clinical tests as directed by the medical provider.
Prepare examination and treatment rooms before and after patient visits. ? Clean, disinfect, sterilize, and maintain medical instruments and equipment in accordance with infection control standards.
Ensure examination rooms are fully stocked with appropriate medical supplies and equipment.
Provide students with instructions regarding medications, laboratory testing, follow-up appointments, and treatment plans as directed by the medical provider.
Observe and report changes in patient condition to the medical provider.
Assist in responding to urgent medical situations within the Wellness Center.
Perform front desk operations, including greeting students and visitors in a professional and welcoming manner.
Answer incoming telephone calls and respond appropriately to student inquiries.
Schedule, confirm, and manage student appointments.
Complete patient registration, check-in, and check-out procedures.
Verify and update demographic, insurance, and medical information.
Assist with referrals to specialists, laboratories, diagnostic services, and community healthcare providers.
Process laboratory requests and maintain laboratory tracking records.
Maintain accurate patient records while ensuring compliance with HIPAA, FERPA, and institutional confidentiality standards.
Scan, file, and organize medical documentation in accordance with record retention policies.
Assist with correspondence, reports, and administrative projects as assigned.
Monitor inventory levels of medical supplies, medications,laboratory materials, and clinical equipment.
Order and restock medical supplies as needed.
Maintain organized and properly stocked examination and treatment rooms.
Assist with quality assurance activities and equipment maintenance.
Ensure compliance with infection prevention, OSHA, and biohazard disposal regulations.
Report equipment malfunctions
Provide compassionate, respectful, and culturally responsive customer service to students.
Assist students in navigating Wellness Center services and appointment procedures.
Maintain a welcoming and inclusive clinical environment.
Promote student privacy and dignity during all interactions.
Provide health education materials and reinforce provider instructions.
Maintain strict confidentiality of all student health information in accordance with HIPAA, FERPA, and College policies.
Follow established infection control, safety, and emergency procedures.
Ensure compliance with OSHA, CDC, New York State Department of Health, and institutional regulations.
Collaborate with the Wellness Center team, Accessibility Services, Recreation and Fitness, Athletics, and other student support offices to coordinate holistic care.
Participate in Wellness Center staff meetings and departmental initiatives.
Support campus health promotion events, vaccination clinics, and wellness programming.
Actively contributes, participates and supports Thrive programming and initiatives
Maintain required certifications and competencies.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Associate Vice President for Student Life and Dean for Wellness.
The estimated wage is $18.83 per hour for 37.5 hours per week for 40 weeks.
Job Requirements:
High school degree required
Completion of an accredited medical assistance program recommended
Two years of medical assistant experience recommended.
Previous experience performing venipuncture, blood draws, specimen collection, and basic laboratory procedures
Excellent interpersonal skills
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with patients and other external parties in a courteous and friendly manner at all times
Must be detail-oriented and highly organized
Knowledge of patient care and examination procedures
Must be able to maintain confidentiality at all times
