Role Overview

The Terminal Maintenance Attendant is responsible for inspecting and processing over-the-road (OTR) tractors and trailers as they check in and out of the yard, and for performing routine preventive maintenance and lubrication services. This role combines shop helper duties with entry-level mechanical work, supporting the maintenance team by keeping equipment moving safely and efficiently. This role requires mechanical aptitude, strong attention to detail, a good work ethic, and the ability to perform safety-sensitive functions.

Key Responsibilities

Check-In / Check-Out Inspection:

Inspect incoming and outgoing OTR tractors and trailers, noting visible damage, defects, or maintenance needs.

Check and record fluid levels, tire condition and pressure, and lights during check-in/check-out.

Report identified mechanical issues or safety concerns to senior mechanics or the shop superintendent.

Preventive Maintenance (PM) and Lube Tasks:

Perform routine PM inspections and services, including oil changes, filter replacements, and lubrication.

Check and adjust tire pressure and perform tire rotations.

Inspect belts, hoses, and fluid levels (oil, coolant, transmission, etc.) and top off or replace as needed.

Conduct basic brake inspections.

Mechanic Assistance:

Assist mechanics with repairs, including holding tools, cleaning parts, and providing general support.

Assist higher-level mechanics with tasks as needed.

Equipment Cleaning and Preparation:

Wash, detail, and pressure wash tractors and trailers as needed, including prior to repairs.

Shop Maintenance and Organization:

Maintain a clean and orderly shop and yard, including sweeping, mopping, and waste disposal.

Keep the shop stocked with necessary supplies and materials.

Dispose of used fluids and parts in accordance with environmental regulations.

Documentation and Reporting:

Accurately document all check-in/check-out inspections, PM tasks, and services performed.

Maintain accurate and timely maintenance records.

Safety Compliance:

Adhere to all safety procedures and regulations.

Use personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.

Perform safety-sensitive functions.

Qualifications

Basic mechanical aptitude and understanding of vehicle systems.

Working knowledge of hand and power tools.

Ability to perform routine maintenance, lubrication, and check-in/check-out inspection tasks.

Strong attention to detail and accuracy.

Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs without assistance.

Reliable and dependable with a strong work ethic.

Ability to work effectively with team members and customers.

Ability to work a Thursday-Monday schedule with varying hours.

Valid driver's license. Willingness to obtain CDL.

Ability to perform safety-sensitive functions.

Performance Expectations

Complete check-in/check-out inspections and PM/lube tasks accurately and efficiently.

Identify and report mechanical issues promptly.

Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop and yard environment.

Ensure equipment is clean and prepared for repairs.

Assist mechanics effectively and efficiently.

Maintain accurate and timely documentation.

Adhere to all safety procedures and regulations.

Reliable attendance and punctuality; maintain a positive and cooperative attitude.
