Job Title: Mechanical Design Engineer
Job Description
The Mechanical Design Engineer designs sheet metal products using SolidWorks and AutoCAD, creating detailed shop drawings and bills of material for in-house machining and fabrication. This role focuses on translating blueprints and architectural drawings into precise, manufacturable designs that support a variety of building and infrastructure projects.
Responsibilities
Design sheet metal products using SolidWorks and AutoCAD in a manufacturing and fabrication environment.
Read, interpret, and analyze blueprints, drawings, and specifications for sheet metal and building materials applications.
Create and modify detailed shop drawings for products to be machined and fabricated in-house.
Develop and maintain accurate bills of material (BOM) for all designed components and assemblies.
Apply GD&T principles to ensure dimensional accuracy and proper fit, form, and function of parts.
Incorporate fabrication requirements such as bend deductions and other sheet metal design considerations into drawings.
Collaborate with fabrication and machine shop teams to ensure designs are practical, manufacturable, and meet quality standards.
Support infrastructure and building projects such as airports, convention centers, and other commercial facilities through effective mechanical design.
Review existing drawings and designs, making improvements or updates as needed to support ongoing projects.
Contribute to a positive, collaborative engineering culture within a multi-engineer fabrication design team.
Essential Skills
Bachelor's degree in Engineering.
2-3+ years of experience in a sheet metal manufacturing or fabrication environment.
Hands-on experience with sheet metal design using SolidWorks.
Hands-on experience with sheet metal design using AutoCAD (2D).
Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints and technical drawings.
Experience creating and modifying shop drawings for machined and fabricated products.
Knowledge of GD&T and its application in mechanical design and fabrication.
Ability to develop and manage bills of material (BOM) for sheet metal assemblies.
Understanding of fabrication concepts such as bend deduction and sheet metal forming.
Strong mechanical design skills in a production-oriented environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience within a building materials or architectural environment is preferred.
in a machine shop or job shop setting is preferred.
Familiarity with ceiling and wall systems or other building/construction materials is beneficial.
Interest in pursuing professional development such as PE or EIT programs, supported by tuition reimbursement.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate, manufacturable designs.
Effective communication and collaboration skills for working within a multi-engineer design team.
Work Environment
This is a 100% onsite role, working five days per week in the office on a standard 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. schedule. The environment is casual and business-friendly, with typical attire such as polos and slacks. The engineering team focuses on fabrication design and supports a growing portfolio of infrastructure and commercial building projects, including airports and convention centers. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Commerce, CA.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $36.00 - $41.00/hr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
