This position has flexibility to work a hybrid telework schedule or work in the office. The incumbent will be required to make a telework arrangement with their supervisor. The incumbent will be expected to work in the office as determined by policy and discussion with their supervisor as business needs dictate.

This position exists to act in an advisory capacity and provides recommendations to the Assistant and State Signal and Lighting Engineers that impact statewide traffic electrical systems design, construction, and operations; to oversee, maintain, recommend, and write standards, policies, procedures, and specifications related to traffic control signals, roadway lighting, and other electrical traffic systems.
The responsibilities include:
Research and analyze new products, materials, and construction methods for use on statewide traffic electrical systems.
Write, review, and maintain signal and lighting, contract documents and specifications.
Provide technical expertise in traffic electrical systems to MnDOT District Traffic Offices, other MnDOT offices, contractors, consultants, and other governmental agencies.
Assist in the MnDOT Signal and Lighting Certification and Recertification training .
Represent the Central Office Traffic Engineering Signal and Lighting Unit in outside discussions and technical forums and in addressing new products, issues, and doing updates at the Traffic Engineering Organization (TEO) Signal and Lighting Committees and other MnDOT offices and manufacturer and vendor meetings.
Minimum Qualifications at the Engineering Specialist Senior

Three years of experience at the Engineering Specialist level (or equivalent) that demonstrates:
Working knowledge of contract documents, construction practices, procedures, and materials related to signal and lighting systems.
Knowledge and application of traffic signals and roadway lighting and operations.
Knowledge and application of the National Electrical Code and general electrical and electronic principles.
Strong technical writing skills.
Ability to research, evaluate, and draw conclusions on traffic electrical systems procedures and materials.
Minimum Qualifications at the Engineering Specialist
Three years of experience at the Transportation Specialist level (or equivalent) that demonstrates:
Working knowledge of contract documents, construction practices, procedures, and materials.
Knowledge and application of the National Electrical Code and general electrical and electronic principles.
Strong technical writing skills (I.e. specifications and special provisions)
Ability to research, evaluate, and draw conclusions on traffic electrical systems procedures and materials.
Preferred Qualifications
Ability to prepare and deliver training material.
Knowledge of Open Roads Designer.
Knowledge of roadway construction practices.
Field experience of traffic signal and lighting construction and resolving issues during construction.
Experience and application of roadway lighting design.
Ability to research, evaluate, and draw conclusions on traffic electrical systems procedures and materials.
Class A Journey Electrician License issued by the Minnesota Board of Electricity.
