Job Title: Construction Inspector
Job Description
The Construction Inspector will support municipal construction projects by monitoring field activities, documenting daily progress, and ensuring that contractors perform work in accordance with approved plans and specifications. This role focuses on municipal infrastructure projects such as water main installations, pavement rehabilitation, and sanitary and storm sewer installations, with work primarily conducted outdoors on active construction sites.
Responsibilities
Record detailed daily logs for municipal construction activities, accurately documenting work performed, site conditions, and any issues or deviations from plans.
Observe general contractors on site to verify that all work complies with the construction specifications and requirements provided by the city or municipality.
Monitor construction activities for water main installations, pavement rehabilitation, and sanitary and storm sewer installations to ensure quality, safety, and adherence to project documents.
Review and interpret construction plans and specifications to confirm that field work aligns with approved designs and standards.
Report field observations, issues, and progress to the project team in a timely and professional manner.
Visit the office at least once per week to complete required reports, submit documentation, and attend project meetings as needed.
Use inspection equipment and tools as required to perform accurate and thorough construction inspections.
Communicate effectively with contractors, municipal representatives, and internal team members to address questions, resolve discrepancies, and support successful project delivery.
Essential Skills
At least 1 year of experience performing construction inspection or equivalent experience reading and interpreting construction plans.
Ability to read, understand, and apply construction specifications and project documents in the field.
Comfort working outdoors for extended periods while observing active construction sites.
Ability to interact confidently and professionally with contractors and project stakeholders.
Background in civil or construction disciplines sufficient to understand municipal infrastructure projects.
Experience using basic inspection equipment and tools to verify compliance with plans and specifications.
Work Environment
This role is primarily field-based, working outside on municipal construction sites that are generally non-roadway projects. The Construction Inspector spends most of the time on active job sites observing construction activities in varying weather conditions. The position requires regular travel to project locations and at least one visit per week to the office to complete reports and attend meetings. The work is seasonal and may pause during periods when it is too cold for outdoor construction; candidates with additional skills such as proficiency in Word and Excel or surveying may have opportunities for extended employment. The environment involves typical construction site conditions, including exposure to noise, equipment, and uneven terrain, and requires appropriate field attire and safety gear suitable for outdoor inspection work.
