Job PurposeEngineers at National Grid play a pivotal role in ensuring the reliability, safety, and efficiency of our electric transmission and distribution systems. These positions involve developing standards, designing control systems, managing assets, and integrating new technologies. Engineers work across various departments to support construction, maintenance, and operation of electrical systems, contributing to strategic business objectives and regulatory compliance. Key AccountabilitiesSubstation Standards Prepare and contribute to the development, technical content and implementation of Substation Engineering and Design philosophy, standards, guidelines, equipment specs and procedures; identify risks and put in place actions to ensure compliance with standards and regulatory requirements. Technical support provided to various departments including Engineering, Design, Operations, IT and Construction. Review single lines, elementaries, physicals (plans and elevations), conduit and cable schedules, lightning, bill of materials, etc. including manufacturers' drawings. Research/support the adoption of new and innovative technologies for the substation business, including support of pilots. Perform calculations and studies (grounding, AC & DC system sizing, lightning protection, lighting, rigid bus design, etc.) to support substation standards design basis.Distribution Planning and Asset Management System Planning & Asset Management: Provide strategic direction for immediate and long-term planning of sub-transmission and distribution systems to enhance resilience and meet capacity requirements. Customer Support: Conduct studies and ensure compliance for customer and distributed generation interconnections, offering technical guidance to customer groups. Reliability Performance: Track and enhance regional distribution and sub-transmission reliability, promoting actions for improvement. Collaboration: Work with various National Grid departments, including Electric Operations, Regional Control Centers and Distribution Design, to support integration of distributed generation, deployment of grid modernization, customer centric solutions and compliance with regulatory requirements. Process Improvement: Proactively identify and implement changes to enhance performance, efficiency, and effectiveness of engineering processes. Problem Solving: Take responsibility for addressing issues promptly and effectively, while maintaining strong communication with stakeholders. Qualifications Bachelor of Science in Electrical, Civil/Structural, or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited school. Engineer in Training Certificate (EIT) or Engineering (PE) license is preferred for some roles. 2+ years of relevant engineering experience, with specific experience in transmission, distribution, or substation engineering. Working knowledge of industry standards, safety standards, and current design codes, especially the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC). Proficient Microsoft Office computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
