Job Description
The Accessioner I processes and organizes laboratory specimens to support accurate and timely clinical testing. This role focuses primarily on blood samples, but may also handle urine and tissue specimens, ensuring they are correctly received, labeled, and entered into the laboratory information management system (LIMS). The position directly supports laboratory professionals who rely on high-quality specimen handling to perform diagnostic testing and guide patient treatment.
Responsibilities
Receive and triage all incoming specimens for clinical testing, including blood, urine, and tissue samples.
Verify specimen labeling and accompanying documentation to ensure accuracy and completeness.
Manage and enter clinical information into the LIMS database with a high level of accuracy.
Perform internal audits of clinical charts and related documentation to support data integrity.
Collaborate with laboratory staff and other departments to ensure testing accuracy and proper specimen handling.
Organize and prioritize specimens according to established protocols and turnaround times.
Maintain orderly workstations and follow standard operating procedures for specimen processing.
Follow all laboratory policies and procedures to support quality, safety, and compliance requirements.
Communicate clearly with team members to resolve discrepancies or issues related to specimens or data.
Support continuous workflow throughout the shift by working efficiently and maintaining focus during repetitive tasks.
Essential Skills
0-2 years of work experience in a laboratory, healthcare, or related environment.
HS diploma but AS or BS degree in biological sciences preferred.
Proven attention to accuracy and strict adherence to deadlines.
Demonstrated ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
Data entry experience and strong computer skills, including proficiency with laboratory or clinical software.
Experience with specimen processing and laboratory accessioning preferred.
Strong attention to detail and organizational skills to manage multiple specimens and tasks.
Ability to work while standing and/or seated for long periods of time.
Comfort working with blood and other clinical specimens.
Ability to follow established procedures and maintain consistent, high-quality work output.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Previous laboratory experience is beneficial but not required.
Prior specimen processing experience is preferred and considered an asset.
Bg or coursework in biological sciences is advantageous.
Ability to adapt to a fast-paced, high-volume laboratory environment.
Strong communication skills to interact effectively with colleagues across departments.
Motivation to learn new laboratory processes and grow into roles such as lab assistant or laboratory technician.
Reliability and punctuality to support consistent second-shift operations.
Work Environment
This role is based in a clinical laboratory setting on a second-shift schedule, typically from 3:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m., including work on Tuesday and additional assigned days. The position involves working closely with two other accessioners on the second shift and requires frequent use of computers and the LIMS database, making strong computer proficiency essential. The work involves repetitive tasks and extended periods of standing and/or sitting, as well as handling blood and other clinical specimens in a controlled laboratory environment. The laboratory emphasizes accuracy, teamwork, and adherence to established procedures, and offers opportunities for advancement into roles such as lab assistant or laboratory technician for individuals who perform well and demonstrate initiative.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Brentwood, TN.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $18.63 - $18.63/hr.
