Job Title: Electrical Engineer - Transmission Protection & Control (Entry Level)Job Description
This entry-level Electrical Engineer role focuses on the design and application of Substation Integration and Automation (SIA) systems for transmission and distribution substations. You will learn to develop and deliver application and configuration files that support SCADA, remote engineering access, and the secure transfer of critical substation data for capital improvement projects. The position emphasizes safety, quality, schedule, and cost, while also involving hands-on problem solving to address technical issues and support the reliable operation of the power system.
Responsibilities
Create detailed configuration files that align with established standards and best utilize existing engineering practices.
Provide complete configuration files and engineering field support to construction and commissioning personnel during project implementation.
Support operations and construction teams to ensure a reliable, safe, and secure power system across transmission and distribution substations.
Develop Substation Integration and Automation (SIA) schemes that support efficient, dependable, and secure power system operations.
Understand and analyze digital communication circuits used in substation automation and SCADA systems.
Apply knowledge of substation equipment, including its operational purpose and application, in the design and configuration of SIA systems.
Use Microsoft Office tools (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and others) to prepare documentation, reports, presentations, and project deliverables.
Develop effective project plans, establish clear goals, and monitor progress to ensure timely completion of tasks and milestones.
Handle multiple projects simultaneously by setting priorities and using effective time management and organizational skills to achieve project team goals.
Participate in storm restoration efforts by supporting system operations and providing engineering assistance as needed.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to work through technical problems and determine practical, cost-effective engineering solutions.
Contribute to continuous improvement of engineering standards, processes, and tools related to substation integration and automation.
Essential Skills
Bachelor's degree in Engineering with an emphasis in Electrical Engineering.
Knowledge of basic electrical power system theory.
Relevant coursework in Power System Analysis, Protective Relaying, Control Systems, and Digital Electronics.
Ability to create and manage configuration files for SCADA, SIA, and related substation automation systems.
Knowledge and technical understanding of the operational purpose and application of substation equipment.
Ability to understand and analyze digital communication circuits.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office products, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
Strong computer skills with the ability to work with engineering and technical software tools.
Effective time management skills with the ability to handle multiple projects and set priorities.
Strong oral and written communication skills, including the ability to document engineering work clearly and professionally.
Demonstrated work ethic through previous work experience, not limited to engineering roles.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Working knowledge of digital communications protocols such as DNP, SES92, and SELFM is highly preferred.
Working knowledge of CAD tools for engineering design and documentation.
Experience or exposure to power systems, power relaying, and three-phase systems.
Familiarity with SCADA systems, PLCs, HMIs, and automation systems in a power systems @context.
Experience or coursework related to electrical design and power systems engineering.
Ability to develop effective plans, establish goals, and monitor progress toward task completion.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail when preparing configuration files and engineering documentation.
Work Environment
This role is based in an operations center in Birmingham, Alabama, located adjacent to a major utility facility. The majority of Substation Integration and Automation work takes place in a professional office environment, using computer-based engineering tools, CAD software, and standard office applications. The position includes some travel for site visits, meetings, conferences, and training, providing exposure to active substations and field operations. Work hours follow a standard office schedule, with additional support required at times for storm restoration or critical system events. The environment emphasizes safety, collaboration, and continuous learning, with a focus on delivering reliable, high-quality engineering solutions for the power system.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $28.00 - $40.00/hr.
