Job Title
Automation Manufacturing Engineer
Job Description
The Automation Manufacturing Engineer identifies, develops, and implements automation solutions that enhance operational efficiency, productivity, safety, and quality across a manufacturing facility. This role leads the evaluation, integration, and optimization of automated welding and finishing platforms, with a secondary focus on automated material handling systems. The engineer partners closely with operations, production supervisors, and cross-functional engineering teams to eliminate process bottlenecks, reduce manual labor, improve consistency, and deploy automation technologies that support scalable growth and operational excellence.
Responsibilities
Lead the development, implementation, and optimization of automated welding and grinding systems, robotic sanding cells, and automated finishing systems.
Identify and prioritize automation opportunities within welding, finishing, assembly, and material handling operations.
Develop automation roadmaps and business cases that improve throughput, quality, ergonomics, and labor utilization.
Program, troubleshoot, and optimize robotic systems and peripheral equipment to maximize performance, uptime, and reliability.
Collaborate with equipment vendors and integrators on automation projects from concept through production launch.
Evaluate and implement vision systems, sensors, tooling, fixturing, positioners, conveyors, and machine-tending solutions to support automation.
Support offline programming and process validation for robotic welding and finishing applications.
Lead automation-related capital equipment projects, including equipment selection, justification, installation, and commissioning.
Improve robotic and manual welding processes through fixture design, process control, and standardization.
Analyze finishing operations and implement technologies that reduce cycle times and improve surface quality.
Support Design for Manufacturability initiatives to improve the automation compatibility of products and assemblies.
Lead Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives focused on waste reduction, labor efficiency, quality improvement, and throughput gains.
Apply root cause analysis and data-driven problem solving to address recurring production challenges.
Monitor and improve key performance indicators such as overall equipment effectiveness (OEE), scrap and rework levels, and labor efficiency.
Facilitate Kaizen events and process improvement projects throughout the facility.
Develop standardized work instructions and best practices for automated processes.
Work directly with welders, fabricators, operators, maintenance technicians, and supervisors to identify and implement process improvements.
Train production personnel on current collaborative robots and future robotic systems, automated equipment, and process changes.
Collaborate with Operations teams to improve equipment reliability and strengthen preventive maintenance programs.
Ensure all automation systems comply with applicable safety, quality, and regulatory requirements.
Contribute to achieving success measures such as increased throughput and capacity, reduced finishing cycle times and ergonomic risks, and lower scrap, rework, and production bottlenecks.
Skills and Qualifications Required
A minimum of an associate's degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Automation Engineering, Robotics Engineering, or a related field; equivalent manufacturing experience may be considered in place of formal education.
Experience with Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement methodologies, including leading Kaizen events.
Familiarity with automated welding and finishing platforms, collaborative robots, and automated material handling systems.
Experience collaborating with equipment vendors and integrators from concept through production launch.
Exposure to Design for Manufacturability practices to enhance automation compatibility of products and assemblies.
Comfort working with vision systems, sensors, tooling, fixturing, positioners, conveyors, and machine-tending solutions.
Excellent communication skills to train production personnel and convey technical information clearly.
