The Idaho Transportation Department is seeking an IT Systems and Infrastructure Engineer III to join our Headquarters team in Boise, ID. This senior role combines advanced systems engineering with cloud infrastructure design and operational leadership. The successful candidate will lead architecture, deployment, and lifecycle management for hybrid on-premises and cloud environments, ensuring secure, resilient, and scalable services that support ITD's enterprise applications and business objectives. Occasional nights and weekends may be required for off-hours maintenance.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Lead design, implementation, and maintenance of complex Windows server and hybrid cloud infrastructures to meet availability, security, and performance goals
Architect and operationalize cloud solutions (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS) across public cloud providers and on-prem platforms; design hybrid networking and identity integration
Provide advanced troubleshooting and root-cause analysis for server, storage, network, and cloud incidents; coordinate remediation with vendors and operations teams
Maintain and optimize virtualization platforms (VMware ESX) and underlying hardware (UCS, HP Blade), and design HA and Disaster Recovery solutions
Manage CI/CD and development lifecycle tooling (Team Foundation Server/TFS, CRM integrations) to support software delivery and platform automation
Automate build, deployment, monitoring, and operational tasks using PowerShell, scripting, and infrastructure-as-code (IaC) tools; create and maintain runbooks and operational documentation
Monitor system health, analyze performance metrics, and provide daily/periodic reports to identify bottlenecks and capacity needs
Plan, run, and report system tests, upgrades, and maintenance activities with minimal service disruption
Provide technical leadership, cross-training, and mentorship to peers and support staff
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Considerable knowledge of:
Current information technology trends and capabilities
Experience:
Planning, installing, maintaining, troubleshooting network, server or storage systems
Resolving network or server problems
Working with end users to develop and implement information technology solutions for user computing needs in a business environment
Experience as a technical lead implementing or supporting network, server or storage systems
MQ Specialties:
Experience with scripting languages in a large production environment
Experience in application integration with multi-tier application architecture
Experience designing, analyzing, and troubleshooting enterprise-level computing environments
Experience designing, analyzing and maintaining high-availability (HA) server environments
Experience designing and supporting Disaster Recovery solutions
Experience with cloud computing architectures (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS)
Experience conducting cross-training in relevant support technologies
Desired Qualifications:
Demonstrated experience designing, deploying, and operating cloud-native and hybrid solutions on major cloud providers (AWS, Azure, or GCP) including networking, identity, storage, and compute/service selection.
Hands-on experience with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, ARM templates, CloudFormation) and configuration management (Ansible, Chef, Puppet).
Expertise in cloud security best practices: VPC/VNet design, IAM, encryption at rest/in transit, and secure connectivity (VPN, Direct Connect/ExpressRoute).
Proven track record designing and managing scalable CI/CD pipelines, container orchestration (Kubernetes/EKS/AKS/GKE), and microservices integration.
In-depth knowledge and administration experience with Windows Server (2012-2025), Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, Group Policy, and performance tuning.
Experience and expertise in VMware ESX virtual servers on UCS and/or HP Blade hardware.
Experience implementing Backup/DR strategies across cloud and on-prem environments, including recovery testing.
Strong scripting/automation skills (PowerShell, Python, Bash) for orchestration and operational efficiency.
Certifications preferred: AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Azure Solutions Architect, Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator/Engineer, VMware VCP, or equivalent.
