Job Title: Mechanical Engineer
Job Description
This role focuses on the design of heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems for a wide range of commercial, corporate office fit-outs, residential, retail, and high-rise projects. The Mechanical Engineer will develop complete mechanical designs, including system layouts, equipment selections, and supporting documentation, while collaborating closely with a multidisciplinary design team. The position offers exposure to high-profile projects, national accounts, and opportunities for professional growth in a collaborative, open, and hybrid work environment.
Responsibilities
Design HVAC systems for commercial office fit-outs, high-rise buildings, medical centers, light laboratories, residential, and retail projects.
Create detailed plans, schematics, and system layouts for mechanical and HVAC systems.
Perform load calculations, equipment selection, and system sizing using tools such as Trane Trace and HAP.
Develop system narratives and technical specifications that clearly describe design intent and performance criteria.
Produce construction documents and drawings using AutoCAD and BIM/REVIT modeling software.
Conduct field investigations and site surveys to gather existing conditions and verify design assumptions.
Prepare due diligence and feasibility reports for commercial properties and potential projects.
Participate in MEP due diligence reviews for commercial properties, identifying mechanical system conditions, risks, and opportunities.
Attend coordination meetings with architects, structural engineers, electrical engineers, and other project consultants.
Work in close collaboration with the entire design team to ensure integrated and coordinated MEP solutions.
Provide engineering support and mentorship to other engineering staff as needed.
Comply with internal group and company standards, procedures, and quality control processes.
Support construction administration activities, including responding to RFIs, reviewing submittals, and performing site observations.
Design and coordinate high-rise and campus HVAC systems, including central cooling and heating plants, VAV distribution systems, and packaged rooftop units.
Ensure designs align with project budgets, schedules, and client requirements.
Travel out of state approximately once per month for 1-2 day site visits to support project work and due diligence efforts.
Essential Skills
4-10 years of Mechanical HVAC design experience with an MEP consulting firm, with a strong focus on commercial office fit-outs.
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited college or university.
Proficiency in Revit, with the ability to perform the majority of design work in a BIM environment.
Working knowledge of AutoCAD for mechanical and HVAC design documentation.
Hands-on experience designing HVAC systems for high-rise and/or campus environments, including central plants, VAV systems, and packaged rooftop units.
Experience with mechanical and HVAC design for corporate office fit-outs and large building projects.
Familiarity with load calculation and energy analysis tools such as Trane Trace and HAP.
Experience performing MEP due diligence reviews for commercial properties.
Ability and willingness to travel out of state approximately once per month for short site visits.
Self-motivation and the ability to work effectively as part of a collaborative team.
Strong communication skills to participate in meetings and coordinate with other project consultants.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
4-8 years of experience is particularly well aligned with the expectations for this role.
Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) certificate is desired but not required.
Experience in retail, residential, and hospitality projects in addition to commercial office fit-outs is a plus.
Experience with medical centers and light laboratory projects is beneficial.
Comfort working on national accounts and managing multiple projects across different states.
Ability to adapt to a fast-paced environment where engineers gain broad experience in a relatively short time.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in preparing reports, drawings, and specifications.
Work Environment
This position is within a mid-sized MEP consulting environment that operates multiple offices, including a small, multidisciplinary team in Morristown. The office primarily delivers corporate office fit-out projects, often in high-rise buildings up to approximately 4,500 square feet, along with medical centers and light laboratory work. The Morristown team manages national accounts and currently supports projects in numerous states, providing opportunities for occasional travel to locations such as California, Texas, Nashville, and Las Vegas for site visits. The company fosters an open, highly collaborative culture where no one has a private office; partners and principals sit together with the engineering team in a shared workspace to encourage communication and accessibility. The work schedule follows a hybrid model, with four days in the office and one day remote, and typical hours are approximately 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with overtime offered beyond 40 hours. The environment emphasizes professional development, exposure to high-profile projects, and a social professional atmosphere with regular events and team gatherings. Dress expectations align with a professional consulting office setting appropriate for client-facing work and site visits.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $90000.00 - $150000.00/yr.
