Description

Our client, an established and well known non-profit organization in the Arlington, Virginia area is seeking an experienced Director of Accounting to lead core accounting operations and oversee financial reporting activities within a complex organizational environment. This position will be responsible for accurate financial reporting, maintaining compliance with applicable accounting standards and regulatory requirements, and leading a small team of accounting professionals covering accounting operations and accounts payable. The ideal candidate will bring a strong technical accounting background, sound leadership skills, and the ability to operate effectively in a collaborative, evolving setting.

Key Responsibilities

Provide leadership for day-to-day accounting operations, including oversight of the general ledger and accounts payable

Direct monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting

Prepare financial statements, cash flow reporting, debt ratio analysis, and other financial reporting for leadership

Maintain compliance with GAAP and other applicable regulatory and institutional requirements

Develop, enhance, and enforce accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls

Oversee lease billing activity and debt-related payment processes for short- and long-term obligations

Manage accounts payable operations, including payment approvals and budgetary review support

Ensure bank accounts are reconciled accurately and on schedule

Coordinate tax filings, capital asset reporting, and debt-related schedules

Supervise, mentor, and develop accounting staff while fostering accountability and continuous improvement

Partner with leadership on process enhancements and other finance-related initiatives

Your base pay will depend on your skills, experience and training, knowledge, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required

7 or more years of progressive accounting or financial management experience

Prior experience with a public accounting firm (audit) and a CPA are preferred

Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, and internal controls

Advanced Excel skills required

Experience with enterprise financial systems; Workday experience preferred

Proven ability to lead teams, manage competing priorities, and communicate effectively across functions

Prior experience in a larger or complex environment preferred
