Summary Please note, there is no pay associated with this position. This position serves as a Without Compensation Research Statistician within the Office of Research and Development (ORD). Responsibilities Leading quantitative aspects of research projects Overseeing the integration of microbiome sequencing outputs with longitudinal clinical, laboratory, medication, and healthcare utilization data extracted from the VA Corporate Data Warehouse Designing detailed statistical analysis plans, including specifications for modeling strategies, confounder selection, sensitivity analyses, and handling of missing or irregularly sampled data Conducting and interpreting multivariable, ecological, and multilevel models that link microbiome features to patient clinical trajectories, healthcare utilization patterns, and facility-level characteristics Generating figures, tables, and analytic summaries that clearly communicate findings to investigative teams and informing ongoing study decisions Documenting all analytic workflows, maintaining reproducible code, and implementing quality control procedures to ensure the robustness and transparency of all results Collaborating closely with investigators to draft analytic methods and results sections for manuscripts, progress reports, and presentations Supporting the development of future grant proposals by advising on study design, feasibility considerations, and methods for extending the analyses initiated in research projects Work Schedule: Full time; Monday - Friday; 8:00am- 4:30pm (Without compensation) Virtual: This is not a virtual position. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Individual Occupational Requirement: Degree: that included 15 semester hours in statistics (or in mathematics and statistics, provided at least 6 semester hours were in statistics), and 9 additional semester hours in one or more of the following: physical or biological sciences, medicine, education, or engineering; or in the social sciences including demography, history, economics, social welfare, geography, international relations, social or cultural anthropology, health sociology, political science, public administration, psychology, etc. Credit toward meeting statistical course requirements should be given for courses in which 50 percent of the course content appears to be statistical methods, e.g., courses that included studies in research methods in psychology or economics such as tests and measurements or business cycles, or courses in methods of processing mass statistical data such as tabulating methods or electronic data processing. OR Combination of education and experience -- courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The experience should have included a full range of professional statistical work such as (a) sampling, (b) collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, and (c) applying statistical techniques such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple and multiple correlation, analysis of variance, and tests of significance. AND Basic Qualifications: This Without Compensation position is equivalent to the GS-11. Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-9 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: developing advanced statistical methods to support research projects; performing causal mediation analysis to assess indirect effects; conducting microbiome data analysis from preprocessing to interpretation; integrating Multi-Omics datasets for comprehensive biological insights, performing survival analysis for time-to-event outcomes; assisting with preparing and supporting grant applications, OR Education: A Master's or equivalent graduate degree, OR Combination: Experience and education that equals 100%, when the percentage of experience and education are combined AND Selective Placement Factor: Experience resolving perfect separation issues in statistical models. Note: OPM defines a selective factor as "A competency/KSAs or special qualification without which a candidate could not perform the duties of a position in a satisfactory manner. Typically, the employee sits comfortably to do the work. However, there will be some walking, standing, bending and carrying of items of moderate weight such as large binders, banker style file boxes, meeting materials, papers, books or small parts. Hand and eye coordination for delicate testing procedures may be the only special physical demand required to perform the work.
