Scope of Job
Responsible for supporting and/or leading athletics communications, media relations, digital storytelling, publicity, and brand promotion for the athletics department. Partners with coaches, student-athletes, media, and campus partners to enhance visibility and engagement.
Description of Duties
Provides day-to-day management of athletics communications operations under the direction of senior athletics administration.
Assists with managing post-game media coverage for assigned high visibility sports.
Plans, develops and executes communications strategies that enhance visibility and reputation of athletics programs.
Plans, develops, and implements short and long-range events and game day strategies working closely with the external marketing and development staff.
Directs updates to local, state, and national media inquiries to promote the image of the university, department, and/or assigned program(s).
Develops game day and sport specific publications including but not limited to media guides, game programs, and game day notes.
Develops and writes press releases, news/feature articles and profiles of coaches, staff, and student-athletes and other related items of interest for internal and external audiences and stakeholders.
Ensures athletic press releases and media relations publicity aligns with established University guidelines and are maximized both internally and externally.
Assists with the maintenance of archival information, records, photos, statistics, etc.
Manages media relations, publications, digital storytelling, and content creation.
Serves as primary contact for high-profile sports and major departmental initiatives.
Supervises communications staff and ensures timely dissemination of athletics information.
Coordinates crisis communications and messaging with university leadership and University Marketing and Communications.
Manages departmental branding consistency across platforms.
Supports fundraising, fan engagement, and external relations initiatives through communications efforts.
Assists in strategic planning and policy development for athletics external operations.
Represents athletics communications in senior leadership meetings as needed.
Develops, cultivates, and maintains working relationships with internal/external departments/agencies and other organizations.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education
Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications or sports management or a related field from an accredited university.

None.
Required Experience
Three (3) years of professional experience in athletics communications, media relations and/or sports marketing including previous administrative and supervisory experience.
Preferred Experience
Experience obtained in a NCAA Division I or Division II institution.
Equipment
Use of standard office equipment.
Working Conditions
Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Some travel and weekend work is required. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley.

Must be a person of integrity with high educational standards while exhibiting a strict adherence to NCAA , conference, university and department rules and regulations as well as a solid commitment to academic integrity and student-athlete welfare. Excellent verbal and written communication skills Strong writing and editing skills. Outstanding interpersonal and public relations skills with the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse community and wide range of constituencies, including the corporate community and institutional marketing personnel. Ability to work under the pressure of very tight deadlines.
