Cryogenic R&D Engineer

Use knowledge of mechanical engineering principles to analyze, design, develop and test new cryogenic helium refrigeration products and improve existing products to meet or exceed customer expectations. Research, design, evaluate, install, operate, and maintain mechanical products, equipment, systems and processes. Create concepts and designs of proto@types and products associated with cryogenic helium refrigeration equipment. Perform thermodynamic heat transfer analysis and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) calculations with focus on fluid flow and heat transfer; finite element analysis (FEA) with focus on structural analysis; and stress analysis on mechanical components subjected to thermal, dynamic and pressure loads. Prepare engineering technical reports on design analysis and product design concepts.

In this engineering research and development role, take responsibility for generating intellectual property that results in patentable technology or trade secrets; and for executing engineering design, analysis, and evaluation using sound engineering principles and adhering to business standards, practices, procedures, and product/program requirements. Plan, develop, and execute design and test programs for qualification of components and proto@types; ensure that designs meet functional and performance specifications; provide technical support to personnel across all the functions for supporting projects; prepare and document engineering technical reports on design, analysis, and product design concepts; prepare specifications for purchases of materials and equipment; and participate as a presenter or reviewer in technical and program reviews.

Use knowledge of mechanical engineering principles to perform FMEA/Reliability analysis of cryogenic components and systems; use engineering design and analysis tools including computer-assisted design (CAD) and 3-dimensional modeling of cryogenic equipment; solve complex engineering problems by applying the Company's engineering practices and utilizing computational packages including SOLIDWORKS and ANSYS; and apply regulatory and code standards such as UL, CE, ASME BPVC (Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code) and NEC. Design, develop and test cryogenic refrigeration technology components, utilizing knowledge of cryogenic instrumentation and control systems, and data acquisition systems. Develop and plan test programs for qualification of product proto@types and their components; and develop manufacturing processes by designing and modifying equipment for fabricating, building, assembling, testing and installing components. Specify system components or direct modification of products to ensure conformance with engineering design and performance specifications. Analyze test data and write test reports to determine if designs meet functional and performance specifications.

Requires master's degree in Mechanical Engineering. Requires 2 years experience as Research & Development Engineer or related engineering role. Experience must include 2 years experience in cryocooler or cryogenic equipment design; FEA with focus on structural analysis; CFD with focus on fluid flow and heat transfer related to cryogenic equipment; 3-dimensional modeling of cryogenic equipment; and computational packages such as SOLIDWORKS and ANSYS.
