Job Title: Electrical Designer
Job Description
The Electrical Designer will serve as an Electrical Design Engineer responsible for leading the development and execution of instrumentation and electrical design packages for industrial automation and control system projects. In this role, you will collaborate closely with cross-functional engineering teams to deliver scalable, compliant, and manufacturable solutions that support PLC, SCADA, DCS, MCC, and other industrial control applications. This position provides strong opportunities for technical leadership, direct customer engagement, and long-term career growth within complex automation environments.
Responsibilities
Develop and execute complete electrical and instrumentation design packages for industrial automation and control systems, ensuring accuracy and consistency throughout the project lifecycle.
Create detailed engineering documentation, including schematics, panel layouts, wiring diagrams, loop drawings, network architectures, cable schedules, and bills of materials for control panels and related equipment.
Design low-voltage power distribution systems, PLC panels, remote I/O systems, industrial networks, motor control systems, and associated control circuitry to meet project requirements.
Support projects from initial concept through manufacturing, commissioning, and creation of as-built documentation, maintaining alignment with scope, schedule, and quality expectations.
Ensure all designs meet customer requirements, internal engineering standards, and relevant industry codes and standards, including NEC, ISA, API, PIP, UL, and NEMA.
Perform design reviews and drawing checks to verify technical accuracy, manufacturability, and compliance with applicable standards and best practices.
Support standardization efforts by contributing to the development and refinement of engineering best practices, templates, and design guidelines.
Assist with troubleshooting electrical and control system issues, recommending design improvements and driving continuous process enhancements across projects.
Collaborate closely with engineering, project management, manufacturing, and field teams to coordinate deliverables and ensure projects are completed on schedule.
Participate in customer meetings to provide technical expertise on instrumentation, electrical design, and control systems, and to clarify requirements and design intent.
Coordinate with vendors and suppliers to select appropriate components, validate technical specifications, and ensure overall system compatibility and reliability.
Contribute to automation and systems integration projects involving PLCs, HMIs, SCADA, DCS, instrumentation, drives, and industrial networking technologies.
Support work related to hazardous locations, Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS), and process control applications by applying relevant codes and safety standards.
Identify opportunities to improve system efficiency, scalability, and long-term supportability through thoughtful design decisions and technology selection.
Stay current on emerging technologies, tools, and industry trends in electrical design and industrial automation, and apply this knowledge to enhance project outcomes.
Essential Skills
At least 5 years of experience in industrial electrical design, instrumentation, or controls engineering, with a strong focus on automation and control systems.
Demonstrated proficiency with EPLAN, AutoCAD Electrical, SolidWorks Electrical, Siemens NX, or similar electrical design platforms used for control panel and system design.
Hands-on experience with PLC systems, motor controls, low-voltage power distribution, instrumentation, and industrial networks in manufacturing or process environments.
Working knowledge of PLCs, SCADA, DCS, HMIs, variable frequency drives (VFDs), and remote I/O architectures, including integration and troubleshooting.
Strong understanding of applicable standards and codes such as NEC, ISA, API, PIP, UL, and NEMA, and ability to apply them in practical design work.
Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, control narratives, and technical specifications, and translate them into accurate electrical and instrumentation designs.
Proficiency in electrical design engineering, including schematic development, circuit design, and control panel design for industrial applications.
Experience with AutoCAD Electrical for creating and modifying electrical schematics and panel drawings.
Strong troubleshooting skills for analog and digital control circuits, instrumentation loops, and automation systems.
Effective communication skills to convey technical information clearly to colleagues, customers, and suppliers.
Strong organization and collaboration skills, with the ability to coordinate multiple tasks and stakeholders.
Ability to manage multiple priorities, work independently, and take ownership of design deliverables within project timelines.
At least 3 years of experience within the automation industry focused on electrical design, control panel design, and schematic development.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience with EPLAN for control panel design and electrical documentation in industrial environments.
Experience in automation engineering, including exposure to PLC programming environments and industrial control architectures.
Familiarity with SolidWorks Electrical and Siemens NX for advanced electrical and mechanical integration workflows.
Experience in designing and documenting industrial networks, including Ethernet-based control networks and remote I/O systems.
Exposure to Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) and hazardous location design considerations in process industries.
Ability to contribute to standardization initiatives and best practice development for electrical and controls engineering teams.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality, manufacturable designs.
Comfort working directly with customers and vendors to clarify requirements, resolve technical questions, and support project delivery.
Work Environment
This role operates in a remote work environment, allowing you to perform design, documentation, and collaboration tasks from a home or off-site office setting. You will use modern electrical design tools such as EPLAN, AutoCAD Electrical, SolidWorks Electrical, Siemens NX, and other industry-standard software to develop and manage control system documentation. Collaboration with engineering, project management, manufacturing, field teams, customers, and suppliers will take place through digital communication platforms, virtual meetings, and shared project tools. The position focuses on industrial automation and control projects, requiring regular interaction with technical documentation, standards, and design packages rather than on-site field work as a primary responsibility.
