Job Description
We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Superintendent to lead the field execution of all mechanical systems for a large-scale life sciences construction project. This individual will be responsible for overseeing mechanical construction activities from rough-in through startup, commissioning, and turnover, ensuring all work is executed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project schedules and quality standards.
The Mechanical Superintendent will serve as the primary field leader for HVAC, cleanroom systems, process piping, central utility plants, hydronic systems, laboratory environments, exhaust systems, and other complex mechanical infrastructure. This role requires close collaboration with project management, MEP leadership, trade partners, commissioning teams, design consultants, and owners throughout the project lifecycle. Based on the superintendent and MEP coordination responsibilities outlined in the source documents.
Key Responsibilities
Mechanical Field Leadership
Lead all day-to-day mechanical construction activities on site, including supervision of mechanical subcontractors, vendors, and specialty contractors.
Drive field execution of HVAC, piping, plumbing support systems, specialty process systems, cleanroom infrastructure, and central utility plant installations.
Monitor manpower, production, and installation progress to ensure alignment with project milestones and schedule commitments.
Mentor assistant superintendents, field engineers, and foremen while fostering a collaborative project environment.
Professionally represent field operations when interacting with owners, design teams, inspectors, and trade partners.
Schedule & Project Execution
Partner with Project Managers, MEP leaders, and Scheduling teams to develop detailed installation and commissioning plans.
Utilize short-interval planning and production tracking to drive execution and maintain schedule performance.
Analyze upcoming work activities, identify constraints, and proactively implement mitigation strategies.
Coordinate equipment deliveries, rigging activities, prefabrication efforts, and installation sequencing.
Support recovery planning and acceleration efforts when required to maintain critical milestone dates.
Mechanical Coordination & Constructability
Coordinate mechanical systems with electrical, plumbing, fire protection, structural, architectural, and process systems.
Review drawings, specifications, BIM models, RFIs, submittals, and shop drawings to identify constructability issues before installation.
Lead field coordination efforts to eliminate clashes and minimize rework.
Validate equipment locations, maintenance clearances, access requirements, and system integration needs.
Participate in constructability reviews and value engineering initiatives.
Life Sciences Mechanical Systems
Oversee installation and turnover of critical mechanical systems commonly found in life sciences and biotech facilities, including:
? Cleanroom HVAC systems
? Process and high-purity piping systems
? Chilled water and heating hot water systems
? Air handling units and exhaust systems
? Laboratory ventilation systems
? Environmental control systems
? Central utility plant equipment
? Building automation integration
? Temperature and humidity-controlled environments
Ensure mechanical systems are installed in accordance with design specifications, quality standards, and operational requirements.
Safety & Quality Leadership
Lead implementation of site safety programs and maintain a strong culture focused on incident prevention.
Perform routine field quality inspections and oversee corrective actions when deficiencies are identified.
Ensure compliance with mechanical codes, project specifications, manufacturer requirements, and industry best practices.
Coordinate inspections, testing activities, and documentation required for project turnover.
Commissioning & Turnover
Support startup, testing, balancing, commissioning, and validation of mechanical systems.
Coordinate vendors, TAB contractors, commissioning agents, and facility stakeholders.
Drive punch list completion and turnover readiness efforts.
Ensure systems are fully operational and ready for owner acceptance.

Skills and Requirements
7-15 years of commercial construction experience with significant mechanical field leadership responsibilities.
Experience supporting complex projects such as:
? Life Sciences
? Pharmaceutical Manufacturing
? Biotechnology Facilities
? Semiconductor Facilities
? Advanced Manufacturing
? Healthcare Facilities
? Mission Critical / Data Centers
Strong background in HVAC, piping, process mechanical systems, and central plant infrastructure.
Proven experience managing mechanical subcontractors and coordinating multiple workstreams simultaneously.
Strong understanding of construction scheduling, sequencing, and critical path activities.
Experience reviewing RFIs, submittals, shop drawings, commissioning plans, and turnover documentation.
Proficiency with construction management software and Microsoft Office Suite.
Working knowledge of Primavera P6 or similar scheduling tools.
Experience supporting projects exceeding $100M in value. - Direct life sciences, pharmaceutical, or biotech construction experience.
Experience with cleanroom environments and GMP-regulated facilities.
OSHA 30 certification.
Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, or related discipline.
