Typical duties include: Serving as the headquarters' expert authority in the field of industrial hygiene, providing technical advice to all CBP headquarters leaders, senior management officials, and field supervisors. Advising management of findings and when warranted, takes corrective action to develop and implement measures to diminish the health risks. Conducting environmental health and safety surveys, inspections, and program evaluations that include, but are not limited to asbestos removal; abatement, operation and maintenance programs; radon testing and remediation; indoor air quality testing and mediation; lead in water testing; hazardous materials handling; ergonomics; tuberculosis; blood borne pathogens; confined space entry; and the Hazard Communication Program. Responding to management, employee, and union complaints or grievances of potential health hazards by conducting studies, inspections, and surveys involving illumination, noise, toxic chemicals (including asbestos), as well as, air quality, ergonomics, food sanitation, water supply, ventilation, temperature, insect and rodent control, solid and liquid waste disposal, and personal protective equipment (respirators and eye protection). Qualifications Individual Occupational Requirement The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: A. A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science; or B. A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene; or C. Certification from the Board for Global EHS Credentialing (formerly American Board of Industrial Hygiene(external link) (ABIH)). Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable. Experience: You qualify for the GS-13 grade level if you possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as: Conducting studies and surveys of a variety of industrial environmental problems. Collecting of quantitative and qualitative data, and the measurement of exposures for a variety of chemical, physical and biological stresses. Analyzing the data acquired and the prediction of probable effects of exposures on health and well-being of workers and the selection and recommendation of appropriate controls, including management, medical, engineering, education or training, and personal protective equipment.
