The Department of Justice, Office of Attorney General Liz Murrill, is seeking applications for an Assistant Attorney General/Section Chief in the Civil Division, Governmental Litigation-Education Section. Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Admitted to practice law in Louisiana and in good standing with the Louisiana Supreme Court;
Experience in defending complex litigation, with a preference of at least five (5) years of increasing responsibility and complexity in civil trial experience;
Experience handling appellate matters in state and federal court;
Strong legal research and writing skills, with emphasis on clear, persuasive legal writing;
Capable oral advocacy in both courtroom and appellate settings;
Ability to work with other attorneys and support staff in and out of court;
Exercises tact and good judgment;
Possesses high professional and personal ethics and integrity;
Possesses an effective command of the English language, both spoken and written;
Possesses excellent time management and critical thinking skills, and able to prioritize tasks and assignments;
Familiar with and able to use email, calendar, word processing, case management systems, and other standard computer software and possesses the ability to learn new programs or software.
Job Duties and Other Information
The duties and requirements of an Assistant Attorney General/Section Chief of Governmental Litigation-Education in the Civil Division shall include, but are not limited to the following:
Primarily responsible for the supervision of suits against the state, state agencies, and state officials in state and federal courts and in administrative proceedings, many of which are complex and high-profile, that fall within his/her designated Section;
Defend the constitutionality of Louisiana statutes, constitutional provisions, regulations, and governmental actions in state and federal trial and appellate courts;
Advise and consult with state agencies and officials regarding litigation and keep supervisors, management, agencies and officials, and other appropriate parties informed of ongoing matters;
Represent boards and commissions in administrative and judicial proceedings;
Provide legal counsel to state boards, commissions, and governmental agencies by interpreting and applying state law;
Promptly draft and/or review Attorney General Opinions assigned to his/her Section;
Responsible for training and supervising all employees assigned to his/her Section, including but not limited to reviewing personnel issues, and reviewing and approving leave requests, work schedules, and time sheets;
Responsible for monitoring caseloads of attorneys assigned to his/her Section and for reviewing and assigning new cases to such attorneys;
Responsible for the coordination of any cases that fall within Section with Deputy Director, Director, Chief Deputy, or Attorney General;
Communicates with other divisions in the office, including the Solicitor General's office, regarding cases;
Serves as mentor and training resource for employees assigned to Section and for employees who serve within his/her designated Section;
Reports to assigned job location timely;
Responsible for appropriately delegating non-lawyer duties to designated support staff;
Remains current on developing and pertinent legislation and jurisprudence;
Maintains an appropriate case load in addition to administrative duties described herein; and
Performs such other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Deputy Director and Director.
