This position supports outreach, engagement, coordination, and internal processes that advance DPS public safety goals agencywide & statewide.

The intern works closely with DPS leadership, division staff, and internal and external stakeholders. Projects are assigned and supervised by the DPS Partnerships and Engagement Manager or designated supervisor, depending on division needs.

This position provides hands-on experience in planning and logistics, data management, research, qualitative and quantitative analysis, documentation, and engagement support. The internship is designed to build practical skills applicable to public administration, public safety, communications, policy support, and stakeholder collaboration across DPS divisions.

The Department of Public Safety is unable to provide sponsorship for work visas. Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States at the start of employment. DPS does not participate in E-Verify.

Minimum Qualifications

Currently enrolled in a post-secondary, or graduate study program in Public Affairs, Political Science, Sociology, Communications, Criminal Justice, Business or a related field.

Experience or coursework in community engagement, research, or public policy.

Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel

Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy in written materials, data entry, and documentation.

Strong written and verbal communication skills

Ability to maintain confidentiality, professionalism, and ethical standards in a public-sector environment.

Ability to work cooperatively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and underserved communities.

Preferred Qualifications

Written and verbal fluency in more than one language.

Physical Requirements

Requires occasionally moving and transporting 50-pound items and frequently moving and transporting objects such as heavy tools and heavy file boxes. This job may require positioning self to move to a significant degree across rough terrain or may involve maintaining a stationary position for extended periods.
