* Please note that this is a limited, part-time position, with the expectation of working 15 - 20 hours per week, depending on selected candidate's school schedule and summer/winter breaks. You will also have the option to work full-time (40 hours per week) during the summer. This position is currently anticipated to last up to three (3) years.
As the Student Worker Paraprofessional with Minnesota IT Services (MNIT) and the Department of Transportation (MnDOT), you will help support MNIT's PMO at MnDOT by performing hybrid Human Centered Design / Customer Experience (HCD/CX/UI/UX) and Business Analysis (BA) tasks, light project management (PM) and quality assurance (QA) support under direction and mentoring from MNIT BAs, PMs, QA analysts and PMO Leadership. Typical activities include assisting with user research, journey mapping, and usability feedback; requirements elicitation and documentation; scoping projects; modeling current/future business processes; preparing meeting artifacts; maintaining project documentation; and helping with test planning/execution appropriate for a student level. The role emphasizes learning and growth while contributing real value to MnDOT software initiatives.
This position requires an employee to be onsite at 395 John Ireland Blvd, St. Paul, Minnesota at least 50% of the time, with some opportunity to perform work from a telework location. Education**
Student Worker Eligibility - To be eligible for an appointment as a Student Worker Paraprofessional, you must be enrolled in a post-secondary or graduate educational program or plan to enroll within three months. Students may be "off" for the summer or for one semester/quarter and remain employed as a student worker, but such absences cannot exceed one semester/quarter in a year. If you are enrolled at a credit-granting institution you must carry at least six semester/nine quarter credits. If enrolled at a non-credit granting institution or one that only offers one credit per class, you must be taking two or more classes per semester/quarter. Any lesser credit (class) load will be treated as a semester/quarter off. Graduate students must be enrolled in at least two courses or making progress on a dissertation. You will be asked to complete an Educational Verification form prior to appointment.
Experience
Coursework or hands on project experience directly related to Human Centered Design / Customer Experience (HCD/CX/UI/UX) or Business Analysis.
Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively in a manner that facilitates mutual understanding.
Customer-focused approach grounded in active listening, empathy, and solution-oriented problem-solving to deliver positive user experiences.
Preferred Qualifications
Basic understanding of project management, Scrum, or IT/software development practices.
Experience assisting with user research activities such as scheduling participants, preparing research materials, taking notes, and summarizing findings.
Experience creating or maintaining business process models, workflow diagrams, or similar structured documentation.
Experience assisting with project coordination tasks such as preparing meeting materials, tracking action items, and organizing shared project documentation.
Experience contributing to QA/test activities, including drafting simple test cases, performing basic manual testing, or logging defects.
Exposure to accessibility practices or standards in design, testing, or documentation work.
Strongly Preferred Qualifications
Familiarity with Business Analysis practices such as user story writing, use cases, acceptance criteria, or requirements management.
Knowledge of HCD/Human-Centered Design or Customer Experience methodologies such as journey mapping, persona development, prototyping, or usability feedback collection.
Strong and effective communication skills, including the ability to summarize research, meeting outcomes, or stakeholder input clearly and accurately.
