Summary The position is located in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), at the Tibor Ruben, Long Beach VA Medical Center (VAMC) in the Electronics Mechanic Unit. The primary purpose of this position is to perform the operation, installation, repair, and preventative maintenance of electronic systems consisting of complex electronic systems where circuit theory must be used to understand the operation of individual circuits, and the possible interaction of other circuits. Responsibilities Duties include, but are not limited to, the following: Installs, troubleshoots, repairs, modifies, tests, and maintains complex electronic systems and equipment throughout the facility Maintains and repairs low-voltage systems such as fire alarm interfaces, Audio/Visual, access control, CCTV, intercom, paging, UPS systems, automatic door controls, video management, data circuits, and related electronic equipment Diagnoses electronic system failures using schematics, wiring diagrams, technical manuals, laptop-based software, diagnostic programs, meters, signal testers, and other electronic test equipment Troubleshoots wiring, relays, circuit boards, power supplies, communication modules, control panels, field devices, door hardware interfaces, cameras, readers, and related components Performs preventative maintenance, operational testing, inspections, deficiencies, parts used, and corrective actions in the work order system Follows all VA safety policies, lockout/tagout procedures, infection control requirements, and healthcare facility standards while working in patient care and administrative areas Supports system upgrades, equipment replacements, device programming, testing, acceptance inspections, and commissioning activities Accurately documents work performed, deficiencies found and corrective actions taken Interprets complex drawings, specifications, and schematics of complete systems to recognize the function and interconnections of the various assemblies Troubleshoots the system from the schematic, following signal paths through a complex path of interconnections of components, assemblies, subassemblies and connecting cable harnesses Modifies systems by adding, altering, or removing components to standardize or alter the purpose of the equipment on the component level, or to incorporate new features developed since the equipment was manufactured. Interacts with engineers, manufacturers, representatives, engineering personnel and field unit personnel in troubleshooting and developing modifications, substitutions, or corrections to equipment to reduce breakdowns and/or simplify repairs, servicing, or operation. Uses a variety of test equipment and measuring devices such as signal tracer, visual-aural; fired strength meter; capacitor testers; audio-watt meter; decade resistor; oscilloscope; radio-frequency signal generators; sound level meter; digital multimeter, etc. Troubleshoots and repairs electronic systems and components when instruction manuals, wiring diagrams and technical information are not available Works from building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, engineering drawings, and electrical maintenance and repair manuals to plan and lay out the routing, placement, @type, size, gauge, balance, load continuity, and safe operation of electrical lines, circuits, systems, equipment, and controls Determines and places distribution panels, boxes, fittings, and connections and installs wiring, couplings, conduit, relays, fixtures, transformers, and other electrical devices, including electrical service entrances Installs, modifies, repairs, and maintains electrical lines, circuits, systems and associated fixtures, controls, and equipment Utilizes knowledge and application of equipment mechanical principles and electrical techniques, materials and safety standards and practices Interprets all codes NEC 70/70E, NFPA 101 Life Safety, NFPA 1, NFPA 99 Healthcare Facilities, OSHA Standards, NFPA 72, IBC, etc. Performs all other duties as assigned Work Schedule: Full-Time, Compressed/Flexible Schedule - to be discussed at time of interview Recruitment & Relocation Incentives: Not Authorized Critical Skills Incentive (CSI): Not Approved Requirements Conditions of Employment You must be a U.S. Citizen to apply for this job Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959 Pre-employment physical required Subject to background/security investigation Selected applicants will be required to complete an online onboarding process. Qualifications PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: The Electronics Mechanic makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, man lifts, and other hard-to-reach places. This requires standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts and carries tools, equipment, and parts weighing up to 20 pounds and, less often, up to 40 pounds. Occasionally lifts or moves with assistance, moderately heavy objects weighing more than 40 pounds. Work is performed both inside and outside. Sometimes required to make repairs and installations in bright daylight and potentially in the rain, work is sometimes required after hours to respond to emergency call outs, inside generator rooms while generators are running. Work may require using a flashlight in less lit areas, on scaffolding or man lifts at heights of 30 or more feet, and in close quarters such as manholes or attics. Incumbent is subject to high temperatures, dust, grease, diesel fuel and gasoline smell and possible contact with these and other chemicals. The environment can be extremely noisy and slip trip and fall hazards exist. Floor and deck surfaces are sometimes uneven, oily, and slippery. They are frequently exposed to moving objects and sharp edges with the possibility of cuts and bruises, and to noise and vibration from machines. Incumbent is occasionally exposed to the possibility of injury from falling, electrical shock, burns, and rotary devices such as electrical motors. Occasionally they climb and work from ladders and scaffolding exposing the repairers to the possibility of severe injury from slipping and falling. Dirt, grease, and dampness are frequently encountered. Various protective devices such as hard hats, gloves, safety shoes, and glasses are used.
