What You'll Be Doing
Job Scope: The Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for providing technical expertise in maintenance and mechanical engineering to support Operations and Maintenance personnel across the plant.
Primary responsibilities will include but not be limited to:
Utilize Root Cause Analysis (RCA) to perform effective problem analysis and root cause elimination, and evaluate solutions for leveraging across the company
Work closely with the Mechanical Coordinator so that the jobs have both technical and field experience during troubleshooting, procedures, repair plans, etc.
Own and execute smaller expense projects as assigned
Provide expertise on troubleshooting failures and repairs, and ensure repairs, repair techniques, and equipment-specific training are made available and documented
Provide maintainability input into Predictive and Preventative Maintenance (PPM) strategy and support the PPM coordinator as required in reviewing spare parts list for existing equipment
Support Operations in the development of operating procedures (i.e. proper steps for starting/stopping a pump, etc.)
Serve as maintenance engineering resources during the evaluation and development of plant equipment criticality list and strategies
Provide engineering input to the Planners job plans
During development of turnaround work, provide input on development of work orders particularly on critical equipment requiring Engineering review or input
Write and support the development of maintenance procedures
Work with the Mechanical Coordinator on following jobs internally and externally to ensure quality repairs
Provide leadership and direction in the day-to-day decision making for the operating area of responsibility while networking with other engineers on site and within the business to leverage knowledge on plant operations
For process-critical equipment, ensure that work requests include engineering input on repair details such as clearances, tolerances, materials of construction, welding procedures, etc. and if necessary, provide onsite/offsite technical support for deviations from this data
Share on-call responsibilities with other plant personnel, and help coordinate areas of responsibility during planned shutdown and maintenance activities
Apply skills and technical knowledge to develop job scopes and plans, and support execution during projects, turnarounds, shutdowns, and start-ups
Provide engineering support on rotating and fixed equipment in assigned areas
Ideal Background
Education: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university is required.
Registration: Professional Engineering registration is highly preferred.
Experience: Requires 3+ years of relevant industrial experience in mechanical engineering.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Must have strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills, as well as the ability to work effectively both individually and in a team environment
Strong analytical, strategic thinking, and problem-solving skills
Must be flexible during off hours to support plant operations
Must be able to obtain a TWIC and possess a valid US Driver's license
Work experience with the following preferred:
Pump System Evaluations and Improvements
Vessel Evaluations and Communicate Improvements/Repairs
Work experience managing vendor proposals and quotations, contractor bids, and development of desired solutions for projects preferred
Demonstrated knowledge of API standards
Proficiency with SAP preferred
Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications required
40% of work is done inside at a desk and 60% is done in the plant
No travel required
Physical Requirements:
Must be willing to work with hazardous and/or flammable chemicals (with proper safety precautions, training, and equipment)
Must be willing to work around and/or manually interact with heavy equipment
Must be willing and able to stand and walk for extended periods of time
Must be willing and able to work in environments that require frequent bending, reaching, and lifting (up to 50 pounds)
Complete tasks wearing the required personal protective equipment (PPE) which may include fire protective clothing, goggles, face shields, gloves, steel toe boots, hearing protection, respirators, etc.
Must be willing and able to work in tight or confined spaces
Must be able to climb ladders/stairs
Ability to work in all weather conditions
