Embedded Software EngineerOverview

We are seeking an Embedded Software Engineer to design, develop, and maintain real-time embedded systems supporting advanced hardware and defense applications. This role spans low-level firmware through application-layer development, with a strong focus on C/C++, RTOS environments, and hardware/software integration.

You will contribute to complex systems such as sonar, underwater platforms, and defense technologies while collaborating closely with cross-functional engineering teams.

Key Responsibilities

Design, develop, test, and maintain embedded software in real-time environments

Develop low-level and application-layer code using C/C++ and object-oriented principles

Integrate software with embedded hardware, peripherals, and communication interfaces

Optimize code for performance, reliability, and efficiency in resource-constrained systems

Implement networking functionality, including TCP/IP-based communication

Develop within RTOS environments (e.g., FreeRTOS) for task scheduling and concurrency

Debug embedded systems using tools such as debuggers, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers

Perform system-level testing and validation of embedded software performance

Collaborate with systems, hardware, and test teams to define requirements and resolve issues

Participate in code reviews to maintain quality and consistency across the codebase

Develop and maintain technical documentation (design specs, interfaces, user guides)

Support program milestones and compliance requirements for defense systems

Contribute to continuous improvement of tools, processes, and coding standards

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field

5+ years of experience in embedded software development

Strong proficiency in C/C++ and object-oriented programming

Experience developing in embedded environments (bare-metal and/or RTOS-based systems)

Familiarity with RTOS platforms (e.g., FreeRTOS or similar)

Experience with networking protocols, especially TCP/IP

Hands-on debugging experience with embedded tools and lab equipment

Solid understanding of hardware/software integration, device drivers, and SoC architectures

Experience working in Linux-based development environments

Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with ARM-based embedded platforms

Background in defense systems (e.g., sonar, weapons systems, underwater technology)

Experience supporting Navy or maritime applications

Experience developing or maintaining embedded Linux systems

Familiarity with device driver development

Strong cross-functional collaboration experience

Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills in complex systems debugging

Strong technical documentation skills

Work Environment

This role is primarily onsite with some hybrid flexibility, depending on program needs. You will work in a hands-on lab and integration environment, interacting with hardware platforms and test equipment daily.

The position supports government and defense programs and may involve collaboration with external facilities such as naval or underwater research centers. Flexible work schedules (e.g., 9/80, 4/10) are available, with a focus on accountability and results in a technically engaging environment.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Westerly, RI.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $60.00 - $70.00/hr.
