Job Title: Mechanical Design Engineer
Job Description
The Mechanical Design Engineer will design, detail, and support material handling systems from concept through installation. In collaboration with Project Managers, this role transforms project concepts into practical solutions by developing mechanical designs, creating detailed manufacturing drawings, generating bills of material, and supporting both manufacturing and purchasing activities. The engineer may also participate in system installation and testing, contributing to successful project delivery and continuous improvement.
Responsibilities
Collaborate with Project Managers to design and detail material handling systems, custom parts, and assemblies.
Develop accurate and complete mechanical designs and detailed manufacturing drawings for industrial equipment and machinery.
Create and maintain bills of material (BOM) to support manufacturing, purchasing, and project scheduling.
Perform finite element analysis (FEA) using NASTRAN, ANSYS, or similar tools to validate and optimize designs.
Apply GD&T, tolerance stack-ups, and sound mechanical engineering principles to ensure manufacturability and performance.
Support manufacturing by troubleshooting system equipment and resolving design-related issues on the shop floor.
Assist with installation and commissioning of material handling systems at customer facilities, including occasional on-site support.
Participate in factory acceptance tests (FAT), proto@type builds, and assembly activities to verify design intent and quality.
Work with sheet metal, weldments, and fabricated components, considering processes such as laser cutting, press brake, and welding.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including purchasing and production, to ensure projects meet quality, cost, and schedule targets.
Contribute to project scheduling by providing design input, timelines, and technical support as needed.
Travel up to approximately 15-20% of the time to customer sites for installation support, troubleshooting, and project meetings.
Essential Skills
1-5 years of engineering design experience with industrial equipment, machines, or material handling systems, including co-op experience.
Proficiency with AutoCAD and Autodesk Inventor for 2D and 3D mechanical design and detailing.
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent engineering discipline.
Hands-on mechanical design skills, including part and assembly design for material handling and material-handling equipment.
Experience creating and managing bills of material (BOM) for complex assemblies.
Knowledge of sheet metal design, weldments, and fabricated structures.
Ability to perform or interpret FEA (finite element analysis) using tools such as NASTRAN, ANSYS, or similar software.
Strong understanding of GD&T, tolerancing, and tolerance stack-ups.
Familiarity with CNC-related design considerations and manufacturing support.
Ability to support troubleshooting of mechanical systems in a manufacturing environment.
Willingness and ability to travel approximately 15-20% of the time.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience working with material handling equipment and systems.
ERP system knowledge for supporting engineering, purchasing, and production workflows.
Metal fabrication knowledge, including laser cutting, press brake operations, and welding processes.
Exposure to CNC programming or CNC operations in a production environment.
Experience supporting FAT (Factory Acceptance Testing) and proto@type assembly or builds.
Understanding of project scheduling concepts and coordination with project teams.
A proactive, hands-on, and go-getter mindset that fits a close-knit, collaborative culture.
Strong communication skills to work effectively with project management, manufacturing, and purchasing teams.
