POSITION OVERVIEW: Within the Workers' Compensation Compliance section, the Compliance Technician supports the enforcement of state workers' compensation laws by reviewing business information, identifying potential gaps in compliance, and providing outreach and education to help employers understand and meet their obligations. This position plays an important role in maintaining a fair competitive environment for Montana businesses. The work requires careful research, sound judgment, and clear communication with both internal staff and external stakeholders. It also offers meaningful exposure to regulatory processes that protect workers and support lawful business operations. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Conduct research and verificationby searching internal databases, websites, and other resources to collect and evaluate information about business operations and compliance status. Evaluate compliance statusby assessing business adherence to Montana's workers' compensation laws and determining appropriate actions when noncompliance is identified. Communicate with stakeholdersby preparing clear, professional correspondence to businesses and individuals regarding compliance findings, required actions, and resolution steps. Document and maintain recordsby entering accurate, timely data into electronic systems and maintaining organized records of investigations and case activities. Recommend next stepsby identifying whether formal enforcement, education, or no further action is required based on the results of each review. Support program effectivenessby contributing to process improvements, sharing ideas for enhancing compliance outcomes, and collaborating with team members on projects and initiatives. REQUIRED SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES: Regulatory analysis and application:Interpret and apply state workers' compensation laws, policies, and procedures with sound judgment and consistency. Data accuracy and management:Enter, track, and maintain detailed compliance data within established recordkeeping systems. Professional communication:Write and speak clearly, adapting style and tone for different audiences including business owners, employees, and colleagues. Independent time management:Prioritize and complete assignments efficiently with minimal supervision while meeting deadlines. PREFERRED SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES: Experience with regulatorycompliance, auditing, or investigative work in a government or business setting. Familiarity withworkers' compensation laws, labor standards, or insurance requirements. Experience using case managementsystems or database tools to track and analyze compliance activities. Ability to interpret business recordssuch as payroll documents, licensing information, or tax filings. Strong attention to detailwith the ability to identify inconsistencies or potential compliance issues. Experience conductingoutreach, education, or customer service in a regulatory or public-facing role. Demonstrated abilityto handle complex or sensitive situations with professionalism and sound judgment. Interest in public serviceand promoting fair, lawful business practices. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (Education and Experience) Experience or coursework involving research, recordkeeping, auditing, compliance review, or related administrative functions. Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply policies, statutes, or technical standards in evaluating program or business practices. Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook) and the ability to learn agency case management or electronic record systems. Strong written and verbal communication skills with attention to detail and accuracy. Experience handling confidential or sensitive information in accordance with applicable privacy requirements. A degree in business administration, public administration, or a related field may supplement relevant professional experience but is not a substitute for demonstrated skills and competencies in the areas noted above. Equivalent combinations of education and directly related experience will be considered.
