Job Title: Mechanical Engineering TechnicianJob Description
This Mechanical Engineering Technician role supports the development of next-generation mechanical hardware through a mix of hands-on assembly, fabrication, and CAD-based design work. You will take ownership of proto@type builds, part modifications, and supporting documentation while working closely with an engineer focused on new product development. Approximately three-quarters of your time will involve mechanical assembly and workshop activities, with the remaining time dedicated to designing custom components in CAD for rapid prototyping via 3D printing or basic fabrication methods. The role also includes operational and administrative support, such as coordinating with vendors, managing purchase orders, maintaining inventory, and setting up simple trackers using standard office tools. Occasional domestic travel may be required to support hardware testing, troubleshooting, and integration at secondary sites.
Responsibilities
Assemble mechanical and electro-mechanical proto@types, subassemblies, and fixtures using hand tools, shop equipment, and detailed build plans.
Take ownership of proto@type builds from concept through physical assembly, including fitting, alignment, and functional checks.
Perform hands-on mechanical assembly and workshop activities for approximately 75% of the role, ensuring high build quality and adherence to design intent.
Support rapid prototyping efforts by fabricating parts using basic workshop methods and 3D printing technologies.
Design custom mechanical components such as brackets, fixtures, and mounting hardware using SolidWorks or similar 3D CAD tools for approximately 25% of the role.
Create and update CAD models and simple drawings to support proto@type builds, modifications, and design iterations.
Troubleshoot mechanical issues in proto@types, identify root causes, and implement or recommend corrective actions in collaboration with engineers.
Assist with electro-mechanical assembly tasks, including integration of mechanical components with basic electrical or electronic elements as needed.
Coordinate with vendors to request quotes, review options, and support procurement of parts and materials.
Create and process purchase orders in internal systems to ensure timely acquisition of components and supplies.
Maintain inventory of mechanical parts, consumables, and materials, including organizing stock and tracking usage.
Set up and maintain simple trackers and logs using Microsoft Excel and other office tools to monitor builds, inventory, and task status.
Document build steps, changes, and test observations to support design reviews and future iterations.
Collaborate closely with engineers, operations partners, and vendors to align on requirements, timelines, and technical details.
Support hardware testing, troubleshooting, and integration activities at primary and secondary facilities as needed.
Travel domestically on a limited, as-needed basis to assist with on-site hardware support, integration, or issue resolution.
Work within a standard task-tracking system to manage daily activities, report progress, and prioritize assignments in a fast-moving environment.
Essential Skills
0-3 years of experience in mechanical engineering, engineering technology, or technician-@type roles.
Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Technology, Mechatronics, or equivalent hands-on experience.
Proficiency with SolidWorks or similar 3D CAD software for mechanical design and modeling.
Experience with mechanical assembly and proto@type assembly, including hands-on work with tools and fixtures.
Ability to perform mechanical troubleshooting on proto@types and assemblies.
Comfort working without detailed work instructions in early-stage development environments.
Experience using Microsoft Office tools, including Excel, Word, and Outlook, for data entry, tracking, and communication.
Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively with engineers, vendors, and operations partners.
Willingness and ability to travel domestically on a limited, as-needed basis.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience with rapid prototyping methods, including 3D printing and basic fabrication techniques.
Background in electro-mechanical assembly and integration of mechanical components with basic electrical elements.
Familiarity with inventory management and materials handling in a workshop or prototyping environment.
Experience creating and managing purchase orders and working with vendor management processes.
Exposure to the full hardware development lifecycle, including design, build, test, and iteration.
Interest in developing both technical and operational skills early in a career.
Ability to thrive in a small, fast-moving engineering team and adapt to evolving priorities.
Work Environment
This is a primarily on-site role within a mechanical prototyping and workshop environment, where most work involves hands-on interaction with hardware, tools, and equipment. You will collaborate regularly with a small, fast-moving engineering team and participate in the full hardware development lifecycle from design through build, test, and iteration. Work is task-driven and managed through a standard task-tracking system, providing clear visibility into priorities and progress. You may occasionally support activities at a secondary facility and travel domestically on a limited basis to assist with hardware testing, troubleshooting, or integration. The environment emphasizes direct involvement in building and shaping new mechanical technology, with visible, tangible outcomes and strong opportunities for mentorship, learning, and professional growth.
