Job Title: 2nd Shift Brazer
Job Description
The 2nd Shift Brazer assembles and brazes large-diameter copper and steel piping systems used in natural gas, chiller, and industrial HVAC applications. This role focuses on heavy industrial torch brazing, working with pipe from 1.5 inches to 4 inches in diameter, and performing complex joints in all positions while maintaining precise temperature control. The position requires strong technical expertise, the ability to read and interpret technical drawings and piping schematics, and a commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement in a modern manufacturing environment.
Responsibilities
Perform heavy industrial torch brazing on piping systems ranging from 1 inch to 4 inches in diameter.
Braze copper to copper, copper to steel, and copper to brass joints for natural gas, chiller, and industrial HVAC systems.
Assemble and join copper, steel, and alloy components used in chillers and HVAC systems.
Carry out brazing operations on piping, coils, compressors, valves, and fittings.
Complete brazed joints in multiple positions, including uphill, downhill, and horizontal orientations.
Heat joints to controlled brazing temperatures, typically between 600°C and 900°C (1,100°F-1,650°F), based on base metals and filler materials.
Apply silver-based and copper phosphorus filler alloys with melting ranges between 620°C and 780°C (1,150°F-1,435°F).
Monitor flame characteristics and heat distribution to ensure proper filler flow and to prevent overheating, oxidation, or distortion of components.
Use continuous nitrogen purging during brazing to prevent internal oxidation and carbon buildup inside piping systems.
Prepare joints by cleaning, fitting, and aligning components prior to heating to ensure high-quality brazed connections.
Inspect brazed joints visually and mechanically to verify proper filler flow, penetration, and structural integrity.
Perform pressure and leak testing using approved methods, including nitrogen testing and soap solution.
Identify and repair defective joints and perform controlled rework following approved procedures and quality standards.
Maintain torches, regulators, temperature indicators, and gas supply systems to ensure safe and reliable operation.
Follow hot work permits, fire prevention protocols, and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements at all times.
Record process parameters and report any deviations from approved temperature ranges or standard operating procedures.
Participate in quality initiatives and continuous improvement activities to enhance processes and product reliability.
Use hand tools, power tools, and saws as needed for pipe fitting and assembly tasks.
Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and piping schematics to execute accurate assemblies.
Collaborate with team members and other departments to meet production deadlines and support a fast-paced manufacturing schedule.
Essential Skills
Proven experience as a Pipefitter, TIG Welder, or Industrial Brazing Technician.
Hands-on experience with heavy industrial torch brazing on piping systems.
Experience working with larger diameter pipe, typically from 1.5 inches to 4 inches; proficiency with either small or large pipe is acceptable.
Ability to braze copper to copper, copper to steel, and copper to brass joints.
Demonstrated ability to achieve and control industrial brazing temperatures in the 600°C-900°C (1,100°F-1,650°F) range.
Ability to perform brazing in all joint positions, including uphill, downhill, and horizontal.
Strong understanding of heat control, joint preparation, and filler material selection.
Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and piping schematics.
Familiarity with relevant codes that define how pressure equipment and piping must be designed, fabricated, welded or brazed, inspected, and tested for safety and compliance.
Ability to successfully complete a braze test as part of the hiring process.
Familiarity with oxy-acetylene gas and oxy-propane torches for brazing.
Experience using hand tools, power tools, saws, and basic pipe fitting tools in a manufacturing or industrial setting.
Physical ability to lift up to 45 pounds and stand for the majority of the shift.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Completion of a brazing or welding school program focused on torch brazing on piping systems ranging from 1 inch to 4 inches in diameter.
Technical training in welding or brazing.
Experience in manufacturing, pipefitting, or industrial assembly.
Experience with plumbing or mechanical assembly in an industrial environment.
Comfort working with blueprints and manufacturing documentation.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality, leak-free joints.
Ability to work effectively on a second shift schedule with overtime as required to meet production deadlines.
