Job Title: Senior Electrical Engineer - Hardware Verification and Traceability
Job Description
This role focuses on bringing verification closure and restoring traceability integrity for a platform-level motor controller that serves as a foundational platform for multiple downstream programs. Rather than designing new hardware, you will concentrate on cleaning up existing requirements, aligning them with hardware and test artifacts, and re-establishing confidence in verification results. You will work closely with a lab technician, guiding lab-based hardware validation on low-voltage control boards and leading a structured, consultative approach to connect system requirements, hardware implementation, and test outcomes.
Responsibilities
Lead verification closure activities for a platform-level motor controller, with a focus on low-voltage (=12V) control boards rather than net-new hardware design.
Reconnect and maintain clear traceability between system-level requirements, hardware design, and test procedures, ensuring System Hardware Test links are complete and accurate.
Review and interpret existing requirements stored in DOORS and transitioning to CodeBeamer, determining which requirements need rework and which primarily require improved linking and validation.
Evaluate whether existing requirements are correct, verifiable, and properly implemented in the current hardware and test environment.
Analyze historical and current test results, distinguishing real hardware or design failures from issues caused by test procedures or requirement misinterpretation.
Identify root causes of test failures by assessing whether they stem from test setup, test execution, requirements gaps, or hardware behavior.
Update and refine test procedures and Acceptance Test Procedures (ATP) to improve clarity, repeatability, and alignment with requirements.
Guide and direct a lab technician in executing board-level tests, providing clear instructions, test plans, and acceptance criteria while you focus on analysis and strategy.
Perform hands-on lab work as needed, including probing hardware, tracing signal paths on schematics, and validating board-level behavior against requirements.
Interpret test results and failure modes, documenting findings and providing clear, data-driven recommendations to improve verification confidence.
Support the transition of requirements and traceability from DOORS to CodeBeamer, ensuring that links between requirements, hardware elements, and tests remain accurate and complete.
Collaborate with systems and software stakeholders to reconcile mismatches in maturity between hardware and software, especially where software has evolved significantly beyond the original hardware documentation.
Clean up existing verification artifacts, including test plans and procedures, to ensure they accurately reflect current hardware and software versions.
Re-establish confidence in verification results by implementing a structured, phased validation strategy and communicating progress and findings clearly to program leadership.
Act as a consultative technical expert, bringing strong verification logic and systems awareness to guide decision-making rather than simply executing pre-defined tasks.
Contribute to potential follow-on work involving deeper requirements decomposition and requirements-based development for future phases of the program.
Essential Skills
Proven experience as an Electrical Engineer with a strong focus on hardware validation and verification rather than pure hardware design.
Demonstrated ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and trace signal paths across complex control boards.
Hands-on experience with probing hardware and performing lab-based verification on low-voltage (=12V) control boards.
Strong skills in interpreting test results and understanding hardware failure modes in the @context of system and requirements behavior.
Experience working at the intersection of systems and hardware, with a clear understanding of how system-level requirements flow down to hardware implementation and test.
Background in validation environments for embedded systems, ideally including ECU or motor-control applications.
Practical experience with requirements interpretation and verification logic, including linking requirements to hardware and test artifacts for traceability.
Familiarity with requirements management tools such as DOORS (or Codebeamer), including working with requirements stored and managed in these systems.
Ability to differentiate between design issues, test issues, and requirement issues when analyzing test failures and anomalies.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to approach verification as a structured, phased effort.
Effective communication skills to clearly explain verification strategies, findings, and recommendations to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Comfort guiding and directing lab technicians, ensuring accurate execution of test procedures while you focus on analysis and validation strategy.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Automotive or ECU Background, especially in motor control or embedded control units, is highly beneficial.
Exposure to requirements-based development practices and processes.
Experience working on long-running, multi-year platform programs where hardware and software maturity may be mismatched.
Prior involvement in transitioning requirements or verification artifacts between tools (for example, from DOORS to CodeBeamer).
Ability to operate as a consultative engineer, bringing strong technical credibility and independent thinking to a high-value statement of work.
Comfort working in environments where existing requirements and test artifacts need cleanup, refinement, and realignment rather than being created from scratch.
Experience with hardware debugging and test execution in automotive, motor control, or similar embedded systems @contexts.
Capability to design and implement a phased verification and validation strategy that builds confidence over time.
Work Environment
You will work in a hybrid environment with regular access to a hardware lab in the Fort Collins area, coming on-site on demand as lab and hands-on needs arise. The work centers on low-voltage (=12V) control boards for a motor controller platform, using standard lab equipment for probing, measurement, and validation. You will collaborate with a dedicated lab technician who handles much of the physical test execution under your guidance, while you lead the validation strategy, analysis, and decision-making. The program is high priority and long-running, with an emphasis on aggressive progress and structured verification. You will use requirements management tools such as DOORS and CodeBeamer, along with existing test plans and Acceptance Test Procedures, and you will operate in a professional engineering environment that values clear communication, technical rigor, and strong cross-functional collaboration.
