Summary This position serves as Motor Vehicle Operator for the Medical Administration Service within the Department of Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration in Togus, ME. As a Motor Vehicle Operator, you will provide transportation and patient care for patients traveling to treatment sites within the community and other VA Medical Centers. Responsibilities Operates light and heavy-duty vehicles such as passenger shuttle vans, shuttle carts/golf carts, pickup trucks, panel trucks, flatbed trucks, carryalls, sedans, crew cab pickup trucks, and sports utility vehicles which typically have an approximate gross vehicle weight of up to 4500 kilograms (10,000 pounds). Transports patients under non-emergency conditions to and from various locations Provides personal patient care duties during the transportation process Completes documentation related to transport such as tickets, fuel consumption, logs, and maintenance service records to document activities. Performs routine safety and maintenance checks on the vehicle to include, but not limited to, the addition of fuels or lubricants and the checking of tire pressure. Performs operator maintenance on one or more motor vehicles including platform trucks, van trucks, stake trucks, dump trucks, or patient transport vehicles, passenger shuttle vans, and cargo vans which typically have an approximate gross vehicle weight of more than 4,500 kilograms (10,000 pounds). Maintains cleanliness and professional appearance both the inside and outside of the vehicle. Provides courtesy rides to staff, Veterans, and visitors as needed to and from parking lots or garages and/or to and from buildings on the facility campus. Performs other related duties as assigned. To qualify for this position, experience must include: operating various patient/passenger transport vehicles utilizing lift systems when loading/unloading patients/passengers; reading and understanding road maps to determine the most efficient and safest route to take; conducting driver maintenance and vehicle inspection; and utilizing work-issued communication devices (i.e., cell phone; two-way radio) to sufficiently communicate with dispatch and liaising with professional staff to expedite emergency. PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: While operating motor vehicles, the position exerts light physical effort in reaching, bending, turning or moving hands, arms, feet and legs to operate hand and foot controls. May need to exert effort to make emergency repairs, such as changing a flat tire. Frequently, bends, lifts and carries equipment, supplies or materials up to 40 pounds. Work is executed mostly outside operating vehicles in all kinds of traffic and weather on public roads and on the facility campus. The position is exposed to the possibility of traffic hazards. The position is exposed to dirt, fumes, grease and to the possibility of cuts, bruises, falls and broken bones when loading and unloading the vehicle.
