Job Summary:
The paralegal works under limited supervision of the supervising paralegal in preparation of complex legal reports/documents determining appropriate method/procedure for completing assigned research projects. Some authority in prioritizing daily work activities. Performs major paralegal work with the Member Services Division reviewing Consent Decrees/Decrees, Qualified Domestic Relations Orders, Guardianship/Conservatorship and Trust documents, Powers of Attorney, Survivor Benefits, Income Withholding Orders related to Child Support, and IRS tax levies with respect to pension benefits. As PSPRS issues monthly pension payments for its members, the Paralegal is responsible for timely and accurate completion of assigned work projects with a high level of quality. Maintain a SPAM filter with Legal Team.
This position may offer the ability to work remotely, within Arizona, based upon the department's business needs and continual meeting of expected performance measures.

Job Duties:
Work independently and as a team with Member Services Division key personnel. Answer questions in person, E-Mail and telephone regarding divorce and domestic relations procedures, survivor benefits.
Monthly review and prepare written responses as to legal compliance of Divorce Decrees, Domestic Relations Orders, Child Support Orders and Tax Levies, Powers of Attorney, Conservatorships/Guardianships and Trust documents, including research on related court records and case status in various jurisdictions, statutory law and answer questions related to these matters. Monthly preparation of Determination Letters and spreadsheets issuing instructions on pension splits and disbursements related to Divorce Decrees/DROS, Child Support and Tax Levies. Enter specific details from legal documentation into a Member's "Court Orders" section in the digital database as well as adding alternate payees to Member accounts.
Provide assistance to Records Manager to accept and respond to Subpoenas and Requests for Public Information, including gathering materials, redacting as needed, making copies and drafting response transmittals.

Knowledge:
Arizona state statutes with a particular emphasis of PSPRs, Arizona public records and Trusts, Estates and Protective proceedings.
Concepts, terminology, principles, procedures of American law and knowledge of the methods and techniques of research and the use of statutes, codes and other legal sources.
Methods, techniques and principles for writing briefs, reports and other legal documents in the appropriate format.
Skill:
Extracting and using information from statutes, court decisions, legal documents and related records, including use of online legal research tools.
Regular contact and providing instruction and eliciting information from members, their family and legal representatives.
Writing complex legal documents, letters and reports.
Basic math and Excel concepts.

Selective Preference(s):
Bachelor's degree, associate's degree or certificate program in Paralegal Studies and/or Paralegal certification. 5 years' experience doing professional Paralegal work in a field related to pensions, family matters or other applicable experience demonstrating competency in learning and performing related work.
