Lead the Design of High-Performance Building Systems
We are seeking a Senior Mechanical Project Engineer to provide technical leadership and hands-on mechanical design expertise for a diverse portfolio of complex building projects in the Charlotte market. This role is ideal for a seasoned engineer who thrives at the intersection of technical excellence, mentorship, and collaboration, and who wants to play a meaningful role in shaping high-performance, resilient, and future-ready building systems.
You will contribute early in the design process, guide projects through construction, mentor emerging engineers, and work closely with architects and interdisciplinary teams within a highly collaborative architecture and engineering environment. Projects span a wide range of sectors, including education, civic and government, financial services, corporate and office, retail, interior renovations, high-tech/R&D, mission-critical/data centers, and healthcare.
What You'll DoTechnical Leadership & Design Excellence
Lead mechanical system design from early concept through construction completion, delivering innovative, efficient solutions for HVAC, plumbing, and fire protection systems.
Evaluate and recommend system alternatives based on performance, constructability, energy efficiency, and long-term operational value.
Serve as a technical authority on complex mechanical challenges, existing building evaluations, and renovation constraints.
Project Execution & Collaboration
Drive detailed mechanical design, documentation, and interdisciplinary coordination using Revit and AutoCAD.
Collaborate closely with architects, interior designers, planners, structural and electrical engineers to deliver fully integrated, performance-driven solutions.
Coordinate with external consultants, contractors, and clients to ensure seamless execution and clear communication.
Construction Administration & Field Leadership
Perform site visits to assess existing conditions, validate design intent, and support construction progress.
Lead construction administration efforts including submittal and shop drawing reviews, RFI responses, and field issue resolution.
Act as a trusted technical resource during construction, ensuring systems perform as designed.
Mentorship & Team Development
Mentor and coach engineers and designers across all phases of project delivery.
Provide guidance on technical development, best practices, and professional growth.
Support studio leadership with staffing coordination and technical oversight for mechanical projects.
Client & Business Development Support
Build and maintain strong client relationships, serving as a trusted advisor and problem-solver.
Contribute to proposals, pursuits, interviews, scope development, and fee planning.
Support long-term growth of the mechanical practice and help shape future leadership initiatives.
Required Qualifications
Professional Engineer (PE) license.
10+ years of experience designing HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, and control systems.
Advanced proficiency in Revit for mechanical system modeling and documentation.
Proficiency in AutoCAD.
Experience with HVAC load modeling software such as TRACE 3D.
Strong working knowledge of mechanical, plumbing, energy, and building codes.
Demonstrated experience in construction administration and field coordination.
Proven ability to lead project teams, mentor junior staff, and collaborate across disciplines.
Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.
Preferred / Value-Add Experience
Experience with LEED-certified projects and a strong interest in sustainable design.
LEED Accreditation (a plus).
Exposure to multiple market sectors, including healthcare, mission-critical, high-tech/R&D, and large-scale commercial projects.
Ability to pursue multi-state licensure; NCEES Record preferred.
Strong background in HVAC load calculations, system sizing, and energy-conscious design.
Interest in long-term leadership opportunities within a mechanical engineering group.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $130000.00 - $160000.00/yr.
