Job Title: Electrical Drafter
Job Description
This role focuses on creating, updating, and coordinating detailed electrical construction drawings for commercial projects using AutoCAD. The Electrical Drafter supports engineers and project teams by producing accurate design documents, as-built drawings, and shop drawings while ensuring compliance with NEC standards and project specifications. This position suits a detail-oriented professional who enjoys working in a collaborative, fast-paced environment and contributing to unique and historic projects.
Responsibilities
Create and update electrical construction drawings, including single-line diagrams, riser diagrams, panel schedules, and cable and conduit layouts for commercial projects.
Produce accurate as-built drawings from field sketches and marked-up plans, ensuring that final documents reflect actual field conditions.
Coordinate electrical drawings with mechanical, architectural, structural, plumbing, fire protection, and HVAC disciplines to maintain consistency across all project documents.
Prepare shop drawings and fabrication details as required to support construction and installation activities.
Ensure all drawings and designs comply with NEC requirements, project specifications, and internal drafting standards.
Maintain and update CAD libraries, templates, and standard details to support efficient and consistent drafting practices.
Revise drawings based on feedback from engineers, field staff, and project stakeholders, and maintain document control to track revisions and updates.
Assist with bills of materials (BOMs), material lists, and related documentation to support procurement and construction planning.
Use Excel to create and maintain panel schedules, perform basic calculations, and support panel sizing and related design tasks.
Interpret and read electrical plans, single-line diagrams, and architectural drawings to produce accurate and coordinated electrical layouts.
Communicate proactively with engineers, project managers, HVAC teams, and field staff to clarify design requirements, resolve issues, and obtain necessary information such as equipment sizes or design parameters.
Multi-task across multiple projects and deadlines while maintaining high drafting accuracy and attention to detail in a group-oriented, fast-paced environment.
Support complex problem solving by collaborating with team members to address design challenges and field conditions.
Utilize AutoCAD for M/E/P construction or systems manufacturing applications, including working with Xrefs and coordinated drawing sets.
Essential Skills
4 to 5 years of electrical drafting and designing experience in commercial projects, with a total of 4 to 10 years of related construction or design experience preferred.
Strong proficiency in AutoCAD, including experience with M/E/P construction or systems manufacturing and working with Xrefs.
Proficiency in Excel for panel scheduling, calculations, panel sizing, and related electrical design tasks.
Hands-on experience creating electrical construction drawings, single-line diagrams, riser diagrams, panel schedules, and cable and conduit layouts.
Ability to produce as-built drawings from field sketches and marked plans with a high degree of accuracy.
Familiarity with electrical symbols, NEC requirements, panel schedules, and conduit and cable practices.
Ability to read and interpret electrical plans, single-line diagrams, blueprints, and architectural drawings.
Strong drafting accuracy, layout skills, and attention to detail in producing construction-ready documents.
Effective verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to work closely with engineers, project managers, HVAC teams, and field staff.
Ability to multi-task and perform in a fast-paced, group-oriented environment.
Demonstrated complex problem-solving ability in a construction or design @context.
Working knowledge of construction practices and the ability to coordinate with multiple disciplines.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Associate's degree (A.S.) in a computer design field, technical school training, or equivalent experience in AutoCAD, design, or related field experience is preferred.
Experience in the construction field, including reading blueprints and architectural drawings, is preferred.
Experience with AutoCAD specifically for mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (M/E/P) construction or systems manufacturing.
Familiarity with maintaining CAD libraries and templates and implementing drafting standards.
Interest in working on unique and historic projects and willingness to engage with field conditions and site visits.
Motivation to continuously improve drafting practices and contribute to team-based problem solving.
Eligibility for professional licensing exams, with the opportunity for exam reimbursement upon passing.

The role primarily involves office-based work using AutoCAD and Excel to produce M/E/P construction drawings, with opportunities to visit project sites and experience buildings in the field. Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $33.65 - $43.27/hr.
