This role performs detailed engineering calculations, prepares and reviews technical drawings and specifications, and ensures that all installations and designs comply with applicable standards, codes, and customer requirements. The position involves significant collaboration with multi-disciplinary teams, regular interaction with internal and external stakeholders, and leadership responsibilities in guiding and training less experienced engineers and designers, particularly on renewable and solar projects.
Responsibilities
Perform detailed electrical calculations to establish construction standards, design criteria, and technical specifications.
Prepare, review, and study technical drawings, one-line diagrams, electrical specifications, and related documents to ensure designs and installations conform to standards and customer requirements.
Lead electrical design for projects from conceptual phase through detailed design completion, including equipment layout, cable routing, communications systems design, grounding design, equipment selection, and equipment specification.
Use, or be familiar with, software packages such as CYMCAP, ETAP, or AmpCalc to perform cable ampacity analysis and trench design.
Use, or be familiar with, grounding system modeling tools such as WinIGS to support grounding system design.
Conduct field surveys and site visits, and review diagrams and other technical data to identify, troubleshoot, and correct power system problems.
Collaborate and confer with internal and external customers to discuss existing or potential construction and infrastructure projects, ensuring alignment with technical and operational requirements.
Provide guidance to project teams to ensure that construction activities comply with design specifications, codes, standards, and customer requirements.
Inspect completed electrical installations to verify conformance with design intent, equipment specifications, and quality expectations.
Compile technical data, perform engineering analyses, and write clear, comprehensive reports on existing systems, engineering studies, and proposed projects.
Operate computer-assisted engineering and design software and equipment, including CAD and BIM tools, to develop and modify engineering designs and documentation.
Provide electrical engineering leadership for complex projects with minimal oversight from team leadership, taking ownership of technical quality and deliverables.
Participate in customer and project interviews, contributing technical expertise and supporting project pursuit and planning activities.
Proactively provide guidance, mentoring, and technical support to Level 1 and Level 2 Engineers and Designers as project-specific tasks are executed.
Deliver training and knowledge-sharing sessions for other technical personnel in areas of expertise, including electrical design tools, methodologies, and renewable/solar applications.
Support projects in the renewable and solar sector, including photovoltaic system design and integration, and respond to related technical inquiries and RFIs.
Collaborate with design teams using tools such as AutoCAD and Revit to coordinate electrical design with other disciplines and maintain accurate, coordinated project documentation.
Essential Skills
Proven ability to perform detailed electrical engineering calculations and develop construction standards and specifications.
Strong experience preparing and reviewing technical drawings, one-line diagrams, and electrical specifications for compliance with codes and customer requirements.
Demonstrated capability in electrical design from conceptual phase through detailed design completion, including equipment layout, cable routing, grounding design, and equipment selection.
Familiarity with cable ampacity and trench design using software such as CYMCAP, ETAP, or AmpCalc.
Familiarity with grounding system modeling using software such as WinIGS.
Ability to conduct field surveys and interpret diagrams and technical data to identify and resolve power system issues.
Experience ensuring construction activities and installations comply with electrical codes, standards, and project specifications.
Proficiency with computer-assisted engineering and design software and equipment, including AutoCAD and Revit.
Experience supporting or leading renewable and solar projects, including photovoltaic systems.
Strong written communication skills for compiling data and writing clear, concise engineering reports and documentation.
Effective verbal communication and interpersonal skills for conferring with internal and external customers and participating in project interviews.
Ability to provide electrical engineering support for complex projects with minimal oversight.
Capability to mentor and guide junior engineers and designers and provide training in areas of expertise.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Associate or Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or a closely related field.
8+ years of electrical engineering experience, preferably with a focus on building systems, infrastructure, or industrial projects.
Hands-on experience with renewable energy and solar projects, including photovoltaic design and integration.
Familiarity with RFIs (Requests for Information) and the ability to respond to technical inquiries during design and construction.
Experience working in multi-disciplinary project teams and coordinating electrical design with other disciplines.
Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to diagnose and resolve complex power system problems in the field and in design.
Demonstrated ability to lead aspects of projects, take ownership of deliverables, and work independently while collaborating effectively with others.
Work Environment
This role follows a Monday through Friday schedule with a hybrid work arrangement, typically requiring two days per week in the office and remote work for the remaining days. The position involves quarterly travel of approximately 5-15%, which may include site visits, field surveys, and meetings with project stakeholders.
