This position is an engineering leadership role in the Medium Caliber Gun Operating Unit within Northrop Grumman Defense Systems. As a leader in Guns Engineering, the Mechanical Engineering Manager 2 manages the production support, supplier support, supplier development and test engineering functions. This position is located onsite in Mesa, Arizona.
Responsibilities:
Lead and manage the production support engineering, supplier support engineering, supplier development engineering and engineering test functions at the Mesa site
Sets role and performance expectations, provides feedback, coaching, training and growth opportunities for direct reports
Successfully manages assignments and forecasts future demand such that the engineering functions are appropriately staffed and have the correct skill sets
Ensures compliance and provides guidance to staff on interpretation of operating procedures and process documents
Provides outstanding engineering support to the Mesa Guns Business Unit including:
Experimental and development testing of medium caliber weapon systems
Testing of medium caliber weapons systems integrated into vehicle / turret
Field support of medium caliber weapon systems
Liaison with Manufacturing Operations to resolve production and assembly issues
Participation on Material Review Board
Participation in the various integrated product teams for new product development, during production and during development of new suppliers
Works with the supply base to improve the design of various medium caliber weapons systems components to make them more manufacturable with fewer defects
Coordination with other functions to successfully resolve technical issues and provide concise communication to customers and senior leadership
Drives continuous improvement of engineering tools, laboratory capability, production test methods and technical capabilities
Ensures that design for manufacture and assembly is optimized during the design process of all new Mesa products
Leads and coordinates continuous improvement projects benefiting the department and other functions
Coordinates with customers and NG program representative to plan and support testing
Part of the Mesa Site engineering leadership team
Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor of Science in a STEM field & 8+ years of related experience, OR a Masters degree in a STEM field & 6+ years of related experience in Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering
A deep understanding of the design for manufacturing and assembly process
Understanding of Six Sigma disciplines, design for assembly / design for manufacturing (DFA/DFM) is preferred
A deep understanding of mechanical testing processes including instrumentation and data acquisition
Prior experience in the design of mechanical equipment is highly desired
Prior experience working in an engineering classification in manufacturing environment is highly desired
U.S. Citizen
Position may require domestic and international travel, up to 10%
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelors degree in a mechanical or manufacturing engineering
10+ years of experience
previous leadership experience of an engineering team
Demonstrated effectiveness in achieving results through understanding and management of internal processes and customer/supplier relationships
Strong oral and written communication skills with ability to focus on multiple projects with competing priorities
Demonstrated experience in making sound decisions in uncertain and difficult situations
Demonstrated strength in technical writing
Demonstrated experience working with customers to ensure project success
Primary Level Salary Range: $126,600.00 - $189,800.00
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
