The Sales Engineer builds and maintains strong technical and commercial relationships with key customers while driving growth through consultative, solution-oriented selling. This role combines mechanical engineering expertise with strategic account management to position the company as the preferred partner for bearing and rotating equipment needs. The Sales Engineer collaborates closely with operations, engineering, and customer service teams to understand customer requirements, develop tailored solutions, and ensure a high level of customer intimacy and satisfaction.
Responsibilities
Develop broad and deep relationships with customers' management, procurement, and engineering teams to advance the company's value proposition and ensure a thorough understanding of customer needs throughout the organization.
Collaborate closely with internal operations, engineering, and customer service teams to bring an outside-in view of the customer and align internal efforts with customer requirements.
Facilitate clear, timely, and effective communication between customers and internal stakeholders to deliver a high level of customer intimacy and service.
Understand and align with market drivers, trends, and strategies of major customers to identify growth opportunities and support long-term business development.
Screen and identify new business opportunities that fit the company's strategy and objectives, and develop these prospects through pre-sales, negotiation, and post-sale support phases.
Maintain a current understanding of the competitive landscape and use this knowledge to position the company's offerings effectively in the marketplace.
Develop and implement appropriate pricing strategies in coordination with internal teams, and negotiate commercial terms and contracts with customers.
Oversee the development of conceptual technical solutions by the engineering team to meet customer requirements and specifications.
Lead the preparation and presentation of technical and commercial proposals to customer personnel, clearly articulating the value proposition and solution benefits.
Manage a consultative sales process that includes understanding customer challenges, recommending solutions, and guiding customers through decision-making.
Support and promote the company's vision and strategic direction in all customer interactions and internal collaborations.
Provide technical sales support and engineering support to customers and internal teams, including assistance with proposals, specifications, and product selection.
Coordinate with inside sales, customer service, and account management teams to ensure accurate invoicing, timely order processing, and effective client services.
Monitor and work toward achieving sales goals, including revenue, margin, and growth targets within assigned accounts or territories.
Use strong analytical and problem-solving skills to address customer issues, identify root causes, and recommend effective solutions.
Maintain accurate records of customer interactions, opportunities, proposals, and activities using standard office software and internal systems.
Travel up to approximately 25% to visit customer sites, attend meetings, and support on-site technical and commercial discussions.
Essential Skills
Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent degree required.
A minimum of five (5) years of experience in technical sales.
Experience with sales in turbo-machinery applications, rotating equipment such as pumps, compressors, or turbines, or fluid film bearings is a plus.
Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain long-term customer relationships.
Proven experience managing a consultative sales process from opportunity identification through negotiation and support.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills applied in a technical and commercial @context.
Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to present technical information clearly to diverse audiences.
Excellent interpersonal relationship skills with the ability to work effectively with customers and cross-functional internal teams.
Demonstrated ability to inspire and develop collaboration among cross-functional teams, including engineering, operations, and customer service.
Confident, technically astute self-starter who can work independently and take initiative.
Ability to listen effectively, present persuasively, and build rapport as a people-oriented professional.
Solid computer skills, including proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite and Microsoft Outlook.
Ability to travel up to 25% as required to support customers and business development activities.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Background or familiarity with mechanical engineering applications in rotating equipment, turbo-machinery, or fluid film bearings.
Experience in technical sales, sales engineering, or account management within manufacturing or industrial environments.
Exposure to hydraulics, mechanical systems, or related engineering disciplines.
Experience working closely with engineering, project management, and inside sales teams to support complex customer projects.
Ability to contribute to and support customer relations, customer service, and client services initiatives.
Experience preparing and delivering proposals, managing sales support activities, and working toward defined sales goals.
Comfort working with invoicing processes and coordinating with internal teams to ensure accurate billing and order fulfillment.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail when managing multiple accounts, projects, and deadlines.
Work Environment
This position is primarily on-site, providing close collaboration with engineering, operations, customer service, and inside sales teams in a technical, manufacturing-oriented environment. The role involves regular use of standard office technologies, including the Microsoft Office Suite and Microsoft Outlook, to manage communication, proposals, and account information. The Sales Engineer can expect approximately 25% national travel to visit customer facilities, attend meetings, and support on-site technical and commercial discussions. Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $100000.00 - $120000.00/hr.
