Job Title: Quality Control Chemist / Lab Technician
Job Description
This role supports a quality laboratory in Greensboro, NC and focuses on routine and non-routine laboratory operations to ensure the quality of raw materials and finished products. The quality control chemist performs quantitative and qualitative analytical tests, evaluates test results against specifications, and supports continuous improvement of laboratory processes. The position offers exposure to advanced analytical techniques and opportunities for career growth into areas such as research and development, project engineering, and leadership roles.
Responsibilities
Perform batch testing and raw material testing for all materials according to established procedures.
Conduct batch adjustment calculations and determine appropriate adjustments based on test results.
Evaluate test results against batch acceptance specifications and approve batches that meet all quality requirements.
Perform laboratory testing such as specific gravity, pH, viscosity, HPLC, GC, and other analytical methods as required.
Use a variety of laboratory glassware and instruments, applying a high degree of technical skill.
Set up and operate specialized instruments by following manufacturers' instructions with limited supervision.
Record test results accurately and concisely in ERP systems, including SAP.
Perform daily and weekly calibrations and method assurance checks for laboratory instruments.
Maintain and follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all laboratory activities.
Follow Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) protocols in all testing and documentation.
Assist in maintaining the productivity, organization, and cleanliness of a fast-paced production laboratory.
Prepare reagents and samples for analytical testing in accordance with established methods.
Support quality functions during customer and regulatory audits by providing data, documentation, and technical explanations.
Actively participate and collaborate with quality team members to resolve issues and improve processes.
Research technical literature and evaluate existing processes to identify potential improvements.
Perform routine testing of raw materials and production samples to ensure compliance with specifications.
Assume full responsibility for minor laboratory projects as assigned.
Maintain professional working relationships with production associates and other cross-functional partners.
Essential Skills
Bachelor's degree, preferably in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering; degrees in Biology, Food Science, or other technical disciplines are also considered.
At least 2 years of experience in plant quality control practices and wet chemistry.
Experience with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP); GMP knowledge and adherence are required.
1-2 years of hands-on experience performing pH measurements in a laboratory setting.
1-2 years of experience with either GC or HPLC; experience with both is preferred but not required.
Knowledge of basic statistical principles as applied to quality control and data analysis.
Training and practical experience with HPLC, GC, FTIR, or other analytical instruments.
Knowledge of quality control practices and quality assurance tools.
Familiarity and experience with ISO-9000 certification requirements and documentation.
Experience in the specialty chemical industry or related industries such as food processing, pharmaceuticals, or health and hygiene products.
Experience working with detergent chemistry, including raw materials and finished goods.
Demonstrated skills in analytical chemistry, chemical testing, and laboratory-based quality assurance.
Ability to accurately document and interpret test results in laboratory and ERP systems.
Strong attention to detail and ability to follow established methods and SOPs.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience in Biology, Food Science, or related technical fields in addition to chemistry-focused education.
Experience with method validation and verification in an analytical laboratory.
Exposure to or experience with quality assurance tools such as control charts and capability analysis.
Understanding of regulatory expectations for quality in chemical, food, pharmaceutical, or hygiene product environments.
Ability to research technical literature and evaluate existing processes for optimization.
Strong teamwork skills and willingness to actively participate in quality team initiatives.
Interest in long-term career development, with potential to move into roles such as R&D, project engineering, or management.
Work Environment
The position involves routine and non-routine testing of raw materials and production samples using a variety of laboratory glassware and advanced analytical instruments such as HPLC, GC, FTIR, and pH meters. Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $24.00 - $26.00/hr.
