Job Title: Manufacturing EngineerJob Description
The Manufacturing Engineer supports daily plant operations by improving process capability, equipment reliability, and manufacturing efficiency in a hands-on, shop-floor-focused role. This position designs, implements, and sustains manufacturing processes that enhance safety, people, quality, delivery, and cost (SPQDC). Working closely with operations, quality, maintenance, and controls teams, the engineer troubleshoots chronic issues, supports automation initiatives, and drives standardized work across production lines. The role serves as a key technical resource for the plant, delivering practical engineering solutions that strengthen process stability and overall operational performance.
Responsibilities
Provide day-to-day engineering support for production lines to ensure safe, stable, and capable manufacturing processes.
Develop and maintain standardized work, process documentation, job instructions, and PFMEA to support consistent operations.
Lead root-cause analysis for quality escapes, bottlenecks, downtime, and scrap issues, implementing effective corrective actions.
Support Tier meetings by providing data-driven insights on process performance, including Cpk/Ppk, scrap, and downtime metrics.
Partner with operations and quality teams to quickly and permanently resolve process and product issues.
Drive waste elimination using Lean tools such as time studies, line balancing, standard work, 5S, PDCA, and Kaizen activities.
Participate in structured problem-solving activities, including 5-Why, Fishbone diagrams, and RCCM, to eliminate chronic losses.
Support the Lean Operating System within the plant and ensure that engineering elements are implemented and sustained on the floor.
Identify opportunities for process simplification to improve throughput, enhance quality, and reduce manufacturing cost.
Assist with implementation of plant automation projects, including robotics, sensors, vision systems, and PLC upgrades.
Collaborate with maintenance and controls teams to troubleshoot equipment performance issues and optimize machine uptime.
Recommend and validate new tooling, jigs, fixtures, and equipment modifications that improve safety, repeatability, and consistency.
Assist with the deployment and use of MES, IoT, or other digital factory tools to enhance process visibility and traceability.
Support Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) initiatives with engineering input to improve machine reliability and reduce unplanned downtime.
Analyze downtime data to identify recurring equipment failures and implement permanent corrective actions.
Collaborate with maintenance on preventive maintenance tasks, equipment centerlines, and predictive maintenance enhancements, including MTBF and MTTR improvements.
Essential Skills
Proven experience in manufacturing engineering with a focus on supporting daily plant operations and production lines.
Strong background in process engineering and process improvement within a manufacturing environment.
Hands-on experience with Lean manufacturing principles and tools, including standard work, 5S, PDCA, and Kaizen.
Ability to perform and interpret time studies and line balancing to improve efficiency and throughput.
Demonstrated skill in root-cause analysis and structured problem-solving methods such as 5-Why, Fishbone, and RCCM.
Experience applying Six Sigma or similar methodologies to improve process capability and reduce variation.
Capability to analyze and act on process performance metrics such as Cpk, Ppk, scrap rates, and downtime.
Familiarity with TPM practices and reliability concepts, including MTBF and MTTR, to support improved equipment performance.
Experience working with automation technologies such as robotics, sensors, vision systems, and PLC-controlled equipment.
Ability to collaborate effectively with operations, quality, maintenance, and controls teams in a plant environment.
Strong documentation skills for creating and maintaining standardized work, job instructions, and PFMEA.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience with MES, IoT, or digital factory tools to enhance process visibility and traceability.
Exposure to CMMS systems to support maintenance planning and equipment reliability initiatives.
Knowledge of cost savings methodologies and the ability to identify and implement cost reduction opportunities.
Experience recommending or designing tooling, jigs, and fixtures to improve safety, ergonomics, and process consistency.
Participation in highly visible Lean projects or continuous improvement initiatives.
Familiarity with vision systems and advanced automation integration in a production environment.
Work Environment
The role operates in both office and manufacturing environments, combining desk-based engineering work with frequent presence on the shop floor. You will work closely with production, maintenance, quality, and controls teams around automated and semi-automated equipment, including robotics, PLC-controlled systems, sensors, and vision systems. The position involves active engagement in Lean and continuous improvement activities, data analysis, and hands-on process troubleshooting in a plant setting. Dress code typically aligns with a professional manufacturing environment, including appropriate safety gear and personal protective equipment as required on the production floor. The position offers a contract-to-hire path and the opportunity to contribute to highly visible Lean and process improvement projects.
